About this deal

Both binos have a big, comfortable, rubberized focus wheel that's easy to reach and operate. With the Monarch, the wheel always offered the right amount of resistance; I only tried it at medium temperatures, though. Montane Women’s Tucana Pants are a wardrobe staple for year-round comfort whilst walking and exploring Binoculars which offer a 8x42 focal range are becoming increasingly popular in the market. These binoculars provide a blend of high-quality optics with a powerful magnification zoom. The 8x42 binoculars are incredibly versatile and suitable for use with a wide range of activities. For example, activities such as birdwatching and wildlife observation are perfect for these binoculars. They strike a fine balance between the 8x magnification zoom and the close zoom focus.

In the end, the competition may have been unfair after all. The Trailseeker got a second chance, the Monarch 7 didn't. It's quite possible that another set of the Monarch 7 would have performed better, too. The Sierra Designs 800 20 is all designed to make nights in the great outdoors more comfortable – no zips required!

Many people don't seem to be bothered by the effect. But if you are, don't let anyone tell you that you'll get used to it. Why should you? There are enough binos out there, so choose the binos that fit your needs instead of getting used to them.

Lower quality binoculars will only be Fully Coated (single coating on all surfaces) or Multi-Coated (multiple layers on some surfaces). I've read somewhere that the difference between two sets of the same model may be bigger than the difference between two models in the same price range. I can only confirm this. (What I don't understand is the virtual absence of CA in some cheap porros - does anyone?) As with most roof prism binoculars, these consist of two barrels that connect via a bridge in the middle. However, that bridge is pretty small, which gives the user a bit more room to grip the barrels near the objective lenses. That means, hopefully, a steady view devoid of shake. By fully sealing the interior, Celestron has ensured that this instrument is fully waterproof and whilst they do not quantify this with a maximum depth or time, I am sure that it will be more than sufficient to protect them on even the wettest of days. Offering the perfect balance between portability, durability and image quality, the Celestron TrailSeeker 8x42 manages to straddle the divide between affordability and quality. They offer good views across the board, with the optical highlight including a wide field of view and a close focus.

While we did notice instances of purple fringing in high-contrast viewing scenarios, such as where the dark branches of trees meet a featureless sky, in all other respects, this is a solidly made, solid-performing pair of birdwatching binoculars with a wide angle of view, making it easier to keep birds and other wildlife in sight at all times. The Viking Peregrine ED range is the highest performer from the Viking range. These binoculars deliver incredible HD results thanks to the use of Extra-low Dispersion ( ED) on the lenses. This special glass helps to eliminate any colour fringing on the viewable image. Furthermore, the inclusion of multi-coated lenses increases the overall brightness of the image - especially in low-light conditions. I have to admit that I don't quite understand what Celestron is trying to achieve with this trash build: The optical quality of the TrailSeeker is as good as that of the much applauded M7, and if the TS had a really good build quality, they could sell it for twice the price. However, as it actually is, it isn't even worth half the price.

Described as 'tripod adaptable', all you need to do is unscrew the cover on the front hinge. This reveals a standard ¼ inch thread that will accept just about any standard tripod adapter, which are specifically designed to fit onto most tripod heads. With the sun in front of you, both binos showed a significant amount of glare, though the image was still acceptable; I didn't notice much of a difference between the two models. At night, when I had a strong street light before me, it was easy to tell the two binos apart: With the Trailseeker, a street light would produce a straight beam of light that crossed the image. In the Monarch's image, however, you'd see an arrangement of curved beams. The reason for this behaviour becomes obvious when you look into the objectives: the Monarch's tubes are ridged inside, but the little edges (or "steps") are not matted; on the contrary, they are quite shiny and bound to produce curved ghost beams. Thus, a good idea, put into practice very badly. The high standard of optics available here makes them the highest performing binoculars available. The inclusion of phase-corrected BAK-4 prismshelps to create an image which is bright and clearly defined. This then pairs perfectly with the inclusion of the ED glass which helps to remove any colour fringing. This results in a crystal-clear image which is completely flawless. You will always be able to guarantee fantastic results when choosing the Viking Peregrine ED range. The TrailSeeker 8x42 binoculars come with almost every feature you could expect for the price. They possess a roof prism optical system that allows for high magnification power and a brighter image. That's not unusual, but as well as claiming a close focus feature they also include premium BaK-4 glass. That means even more light passes through, which is great news for using in low-light and for stargazing, with the multi-coated lenses helping out in that regard, too. I measured the outer ocular lens to be 23mm in diameter, which is on the larger end of the spectrum for a 42mm binocular. Likewise, under the rubber covers, the eyecups also look to be metal which is also excellent, although unlike some very high-end instruments, I don't think these can be completely unscrewed should you need to have them replaced.

The magnesium-alloy will last a lifetime and ensures that the binoculars are waterproof. The addition of the metal multi-stop eyecups make this more durable than standard plastic eyecups. This corrects the positioning of the eyecups for the user. This ensures that they are comfortable especially for use with spectacles. The Trailseeker looks and feels very good, very solid. The casing is covered by a hardish rubber, but it still gives you a good grip; the rubber doesn't smell.
