It is so distinctive in shape that some of the team have suggested declaring the skull as a new species of the genus Homo, and it has been dubbed Dragon Man, or Homo longi. The name is derived from the Long Jiang, or Dragon River, in the Heilongjiang province of China. Its estimated Middle Pleistocene age places it as an Asian contemporary of the evolving H. sapiens, H. neanderthalensis, and possibly the enigmatic Denisovan lineage,' adds Chris. A team led by Prof Qiang Ji at the Hebei GEO University described the skull in a new paper published in the journal The Innovation. Stringer explained that his Chinese colleagues had decided upon the name Homo longi, which he called a “great name,” but said he would have been equally happy to refer to the species as Homo Daliensis, which was previously used for the Dali cranium.

The tree that sprouted placed the Harbin skull on a new branch that is closely related to our own species.
