Dragonsdawn • Collection The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall ( The P.E.R.N. Survey, The Dolphins' Bell, The Ford of Red Hanrahan, The Second Weyr, Rescue Run) A reread after many years, which holds up well. Not much style but a lot of substance--settlers fleeing a dying Earth emigrate across the stars to a planet in orbit around Rukbat. A story for our times for sure. Two turns (years) have passed since Lessa impressed Ramoth. Ramoth is now full-grown, but Lessa is forbidden from flying with her, instead restricted to learning teaching ballads. The Weyrleader, R'gul, claims that queen dragons don't fly — except to mate — stating this is tradition. Lessa disbelieves him — noting that a Weyrwoman and her queen were not forbidden from flying in the historical Ballad of « Moreta's Ride». Chitwood, Adam (12 April 2011). The Masterharper of Pern, by Anne McCaffrey (1998; prequel to Dragonflight and the other works of the Ninth Pass) She died on the 21st November 2011, at the age of eighty five years after suffering from stroke. She had two sons and a daughter. At the time of her death, she had published over fifty novels and innumerable short stories. She had an award in almost everything there was to win in her field. At Benden Weyr, F'lar prepares for the return of Thread — despite the deposed R'gul refusing to believe it will return, having failed to appear previously and resulting in the Second Long Interval — before going to teach Ramoth how to go between — seemingly «teleporting» to distant locations by envisioning a location and travelling there through a void known as between — lest she attempts it on her own and endangers herself. After the huge success of THE WHITE DRAGON the Pern series was growing, but when it was time for Book 7 Michael had a scheduling conflict. He had to base his cover art on Anne’s synopsis of what she was planning to write as she hadn’t finished the manuscript. She ended up liking the “conference in the clouds” scene so much, she wrote it into her story. There’s no better description for this cover than Anne McCaffrey’s own words, from her comments in Michael’s first art book Wonderworks:Join the DragonRiders (warriors, thread fighters, and peace-keepers), harpers (musicians and educators), and other heroes and heroines as they work to protect Pern and uncover secrets long forgotten. The next day, F'lar summons the Lord Holders and Craftmasters of Pern to Benden Weyr to discuss the return of Thread. While there, the Masterharper, Robinton, criticises the Lord Holders who disregarded the teachings of his Harpers and ignored the warnings of Thread. While discussing how they deal with Thread that lands, Masterweaver Zurg notes a tapestry he once saw at Ruatha Hold depicting people using flamethrowers. The Mastersmith, Fandarel, plans to reconstruct the flamethrowers, and they decide to find the tapestry. At first, I found this book confusing, which lessened my enjoyment. But the book's reputation convinced me to plow through, and by the end I felt duly rewarded. This story has once again given me a world, place and time to escape to. Thank you, I love the characters and the great and well written story line.

Dragonholder: The Life and Dreams (So Far) of Anne McCaffrey by her son. New York: Ballantine. ISBN 978-0-345-42217-0. He has subtly touched on the ambivalence of the hero’s position, hinted at his strength of character, clearly depicted the dragon’s beauty and size, added the darting curiosity of the fire-lizards haunting dragon and rider, the rough, harsh landscape of the beleaguered planet Pern, and the significantly distant figures of the dragonriders silhouetted against the dreaded Red Star. I'd read and enjoyed a great many McCaffrey novels as a teenager, but suddenly I found myself feeling that I'd outgrown them, indeed as I grew older and became a good bit more jaded, I started viewing them as overly fluffy and sentimental. Perhaps because now my life contains a good bit more fluffitude and sentimentality, I have found McCaffrey increasingly on my mind of late, and myself referring to her surprisingly often in book related discussions with my lady.
