I'd seen that in Japan they often use slatted timber – narrow slats of timber with spaces between them," he recalled. Maybe. But, like, really, aren’t we all made of flesh and skin underneath it all? Aren’t we made of much, much softer things that break too easily?”

House finally realized the problem was the Vicodin, and during his withdrawal, Amber constantly tortured him, laughing and telling him he was worthless. However, once the withdrawal period was over, the hallucination appears to have vanished for good. Although otherwise she seems happy and secure in Daban, and becomes like an elder sister to the other house-girl, 11 year-old Mary. But then a relative of Aunty's arrives from UK, 'Nana', wife of a successful ex-pat businessman Doctor Otuo, and tells Belinda of her own 17 year old daughter, Amma. But soon Bellinda is sent to London as a companion and friend to Amma. Bellinda misses Mary but her only hope at a decent life is to befriend Anna. As these two women start to unfold, a friendship develops between them and they realize that they need each other more than they thought, especially with their inner demons trying to gnaw them away. Hold has a really striking cover which would light up any bookcase or coffee table and it is a book I really wanted to love. It was another of my recent holiday reads but it has taken me until now to process a review, as I found it difficult to unscramble my thoughts into a few coherent sentences without sounding a little over-critical in my words. I feel bad criticizing the work of an author, especially a debut novel, as it feels as though I'm criticizing someone's newborn child. There were some fairly generic Ghana-London comparisons - for example between the tiny houses of the London middle class contrasted with the vast houses in Ghana; and the pressure in Ghana of social appearances. There is the earnestness and hard work of Ghanaians to make the most of meagre resources contrasted with the frivolity of Londoners squandering their advantages. But this is not really adding much to our knowledge of the world. Depression is a strong theme within the book, as is the pretense that is carefully curated to hide the pain and the hollowness that a lot of the women in the book face. It’s something that sits heavy in the text, not letting up till the very end. This is a book that surrounds you with helplessness and drowns you in pain. Belinda is a teenage Ghanaian village girl, sold by her mother into bonded labour as a servant girl in a big house. The owners of that house, Aunty and Uncle, then sell Belinda on to a Ghanaian family living in London to be a good influence on their wayward daughter Amma. There is a strange use of English used conversationally between the people in this book from Ghana, and I couldn't understand if this was, culturally, the way Ghanaian people would speak English or if the author was trying to do something. It was hard to read though, as it felt like it had originally been written in another language and then put through Google translate to transform into English. It wasn't nice to read and I felt it interrupted the flow of the story sometimes and made it stilted and awkward. Housegirl is a story of female friendship, coming-of-age, and claiming one’s identity. It is slower-moving, but a worthwhile effort overall due to immersive culture and well-drawn characters.

TV Tropes has noted that Amber's death is an example of the Alas, Poor Scrappy trope - the death of a widely disliked character that still has an unexpected emotional effect on the audience or characters. House's team was emotionally crushed by her death, even though they generally disliked Amber. Wilson himself points this out in Dying Changes Everything.I referenced a lot of Japanese architecture," he recalled."If you look at the house in Hygo by Gosize you'll see lots of its influence." Henson drew on the design of F Residence by Gosize for the set. Photography is by Akiyoshi Fukuzawa The impact of her death on the other characters and Wilson and House's friendship formed a major plot point well into the 5th season. She had a similarly tough time in Ugly, particularly when it appeared Samira Terzi would catch one of what appeared to be two remaining spots. However, she was saved when House decided to fire Samira instead. Belinda originally came from a village where life was very different indeed. She had quite a harsh childhood and witnessed some activities that no child should ever be exposed to. Aunty and Uncle have looked after Belinda in recent years and she trusts that this adventure they are encouraging her to take is for the best. Mary is still learning the rules. Eleven-years old and irrepressible, the young housegirl-in-training is the little sister Belinda never had.
