Kursk: what really happened in the submarine disaster? Kursk: what really happened in the submarine disaster?

Dear Vinterberg: were you scared to portray Putin in the film? If so, don't undertake such a film, or at least don't call it a "true story." Even later, when Larry King, asked Putin in an interview "What happened to the submarine?" - Putin replied with a callous smirk "She drowned." The heart-breaking letter was written by Dmitri Kolesnikov, the commander of the torpedo section - why not honor him by using the real name? You ascribed the letter to the submarinen commander-in-chief, which is false. Listen to a song "Captain Kolesnokov" By Yuri Shevchuk - it is true to real feelings from this tragedy. The surviving crew members rally at the aft-most compartment, now rapidly taking on water. The crew desperately await rescue, while on dry land the sailors’ wives begin to hear rumours regarding the submarine. Royal Navy Commodore David Russell detects the seismic events and deduces that Kursk has had an accident. Admiral Grudzinsky, commander of the Northern Fleet, initially believes there are no survivors, but immediately tapping is heard through the hull of the submarine and the Russians deploy a rescue submersible. The old and poorly maintained craft cannot form a seal on the Kursk 's hull and is forced to return to the surface and wait for a 12-hour battery recharge. I found myself gripping my seat on more than one occasion as the situation the men found themselves in began to worsen, and I lost count of the number of times I involuntarily held my breath during underwater scenes which were literally a matter of life and death for all involved.Great online store for board games. What followed was a media storm, with accusations of a cover up and a major political misfire by the newly elected President Vladmir Putin, who had refused to cut short his holiday while his submariners were dying. They ran out of money,” says Philip D Grove, a naval historian and lecturer at Britannia Royal Navy College. “People were short of pay, there were poorly trained conscripts, and some of them were giving up their jobs. The whole thing was breaking down by the mid-to-late Nineties. Intercutting between the plight of the men on the Kursk, their families at home, and the Russian bureaucrats in their offices, makes for an interwoven narrative where all sides of the people involved are highlighted, and specifically the motivation for their different agendas.

But, as depicted in the film, the once-powerful Russian Navy was vastly depleted and under crippling financial strain by 2000. “Twenty years ago for this exercise we had three times this number of ships,” says Admiral Grudzinsky (Peter Simonischek) as he looks on the fleet. On August 12, 2000, two underwater explosions sank the Kursk, Russia’s most technologically advanced submarine, plunging it 100m to the bottom of the Barents Sea. The second explosion was so big that it hit 4.2 on the Richter scale and was detected as far away as Alaska. Initially there were survivors – a reported 23 men trapped in the husk of the submarine – but after days of botched rescue attempts and stubbornness from the Russian Navy, the disaster had claimed the lives of all 118 crew members. It’s a haunting, hopeless moment in a film that not only stings with sadness but bristles with rage. Like in 2016’s Deepwater Horizon, which told of a similarly waterlogged disaster, there’s frighteningly well-choreographed human tragedy but also an unblinking urgency in holding the feet of those accountable to the fire. In that film it was the callous corporate greed of BP. This time, it’s the inhumane pridefulness of the Russian military.Billington, Alex (15 May 2019). "Full US Trailer for Russian Submarine Film 'The Command' aka 'Kursk' ". First Showing . Retrieved 15 May 2019. Kursk: The Last Mission is a tension filled emotional rollercoaster that I hope doesn\’t get overshadowed by more \’mainstream\’ and bigger budget movies. On Aug. 12, 2000, explosions aboard the Russian submarine Kursk cause it to sink during a naval exercise in the Barents Sea, leaving 23 survivors trapped below on the ocean floor. For the next seven days, members of a rescue team frantically work to reach the men before their dwindling oxygen supply runs out. Captain-Lieutenant Mikhail Averin prepares for an exercise in the Barents Sea by the Russian Northern Fleet. Budget cuts have meant that he and his colleagues have not received their pay in months, but the submariners of the Oscar II-class submarine Kursk still head out into deep waters. However, the exercise does not go to plan. The disaster took place while the sub was on naval exercises in the Barents Sea. When an explosion takes place in the sub, the vessel sinks to the bottom, killing the majority of the crew, save for 23 survivors (accrding to the film), who seal themselves in one section of the sub. Of course all the while this is happening, oxygen is running out. One of the lead men is Captain-lieutenant Mikhail Averin (Matthias Schoenaerts) who tries to galvanise the men and do something himself to try to escape. Meanwhile, on dry land, Averin’s wife, Tanya (Lea Seydoux) tries to battle the authorities for information. In the film, a rescue attempt is made, but in reality this never happened and the surviving men were already dead by the time this rescue effort took place. It is clear that the filmmakers took liberties with the story for dramatic effect, but, nevertheless, could have capitalised more on the battle with the authorities.
