About this deal

Speaking of Ryann, she and Lux do almost all the work in actually stopping Davin. I guess it'd be too much to assume that a plan that involves trusting Apollo would work well, but Lux really bails the group out of just about everything because she decided to adopt mindfulness and forgiveness as her policy. Maybe I should have noticed that Ryann being so blasé about repeatedly passing out was a sign something was up. Maybe having the one regular human in the group (at least, the one who was like that for most of the series) save the day is supposed to be inspiring to all the regular humans that read these books, but being completely blindsided by how the heroes outwit a scheming villain isn't that satisfying. Nineteen-year-old Harley Merlin can sense people's emotions, among other things. It's how she snagged her first job pinpointing cheaters at a casino. But she has no clue where she got these freakish powers because she spent her childhood jumping from home to home in the foster system, and her father left her with nothing more than a cryptic note. The writer here essentially told us this not a "good school clique" vs. "bad school clique" thing but something more "complicated", a dynamic that she promptly forgets to demonstrate anywhere and went on to ignore completely for the rest of the book. The author starts this book with a small synopsis of what transpired in the first book, making it easy for those who didn’t read it to understand whatever is happening. All the characters in the first book are more fleshed out, especially Tatyana, who remained a bit of a mystery in the first book. A fun read and a good start of a promising story. I do have my gripe with this one but they are more than balanced out by the good points.

I really loved the pixies, however. They've got so much personality, I really hope they make another appearance. rather than the author’s writing style, the plot or the characters that tanked this for me. Let me explain. Harley, that has discovered at a young age of her supernatural ability, discovers a completely new world after helping an “electric” guy to defeat a gargoyle. And with the new world she will disclose misteriosa about her real family. As for the book itself. I loved it. At the beginning I didn't like Harley's point of view and then the book really got going. An annoying thing, though, was the minor plot-holes I'd been ignoring them so far but I couldn't any more. The one plot-hole that I'm glad for is the humans seeing monsters. In the first book humans couldn't see the monsters and I'm glad that the author changed that.Similar to Book 2, which is narrated in the alternating first-person points of view of both Harley and her teammate, Tatyana, this book is narrated in the alternating first-person POVs of both Harley and her teammate Santana, whose magical powers come from powerful spiritual entities called Orishas. As the threat of witch hunters circles the Institute, a mysterious illness begins to affect the Institute’s monsters, and a long-disappeared frenemy reappears with intentions unknown. One thing is clear: they’re here to stir up even more trouble among the local monsters-in-residence, and it seems like it’s working on everyone. When a rogue 19-year-old witch is recruited to help guard an ancient magical Bestiary, a breath-stealing journey begins... If what is hidden is found, the mighty shall fall... Time is running out. For the final ritual, Katherine will sacrifice twelve magicals with rare abilities. Harley has already lost so much, and she can’t bear to sacrifice anything more. She w... Several other reviewers, as well as the book’s description, have compared Harley Merlin to Harry Potter, and the comparisons are apt—a magical society/school that humans are unaware of; bureaucratic elements; forces of evil; an orphaned main character with an opaque family history.

Persie Merlin and the Dying Song by Bella Forrest | Goodreads

But when Persie Purges something rare and extraordinary, her future at the Institute becomes unclear. And when students start disappearing soon afterward, much more than just a degree is suddenly at risk.Bella Forrest’s original series, A Shade of Vampire, has over thirty books in it now. The series was named after the title of the first book in the series. The protagonist, Sofia Claremont, has just turned seventeen when she gets trapped in a nightmare. While in the dream, she meets a mysterious creature with pale skin. Sofia is then swept away to The Shade, an island that has been bewitched to prevent the sun from ever shining. The Shade is controlled by a coven of vampires that are the most powerful in the world. Sofia becomes a captive on the island and is soon taken to the dwelling of Derek Novak: a vampire prince who craves power and Sofia’s blood. Sofia finds his home a safe haven rather than a prison, and realizes it is by far the safest place on the island. To continue surviving, Sofia must swoon Derek and win his trust. If she succeeds, she will live to see tomorrow. If she fails, she could meet the same kismet as all the other girls who have been involved with the Novaks. Sofia and Derek’s story is followed throughout the first seven books in the A Shade of Vampire Series. Harley and her teammates are dedicated to halting Katherine’s terrifying goal of obtaining godlike power and enslaving the whole world. Their current crucial, intermediate mission in that regard is to rescue dozens of magical children whom Katherine has kidnapped for her nefarious ends, and who continue to be missing, in spite of attempts to rescue them that began in Book 2. There’s a traitor lurking within the SDC who clearly must be a shapeshifter, which puts all shapeshifters under suspicion, including Garrett. In addition, Holly yearns to gain access to her parents’ Grimoire, a magical spellbook, which she learns is located in the New York Coven which, before their deaths, her parents were head of. Holly also has learned that she has had a device called a Suppressor implanted inside her body since infancy which is suppressing her magical powers. She wants to get it removed, but the process is difficult to achieve and quite dangerous. Ugh, who ends a book on such a big cliff hanger like that. I mean I know it's a series but damn. It wouldn't have hurt to end the book with what the letter said and left us hanging on that... This was probably the weakest of the whole series so far for me. I like Nathan's character but I think Forrest struggled to really find his voice. I know that he's supposed to be scholarly but it's coming off as like reading an academic paper instead of a human being speaking. It was just a little too clunky for me and took me out of the scene. It is what it is, Harley. This thing is going right into a junkyard. Get over it and worry more about why there are gargoyles following you around in the first place.”

Wow am I getting annoyed with how slow the romance is going in this! I feel like we were given Santana's POV just so we could have a little romance. Though I did enjoy that it concentrated more on Santana's life, than a side character just talking about Harley the whole time (which there was still some of that). I thought it was interesting to see which character the author chose for which scenes. This book doesn’t have anything to do with the next Harry Potter, as it is advertised, but definitely “borrows” one too many concepts and ideas from Harry Potter and is incredibly predictable.I loved the ups and downs, and the book kept my attention. I couldn't tell what was going to happen next! I loved Finch and thought that this was an amazing book to finish the series. This author is amazing! I gave my rating based on the series, not necessarily this book standing alone. This book was different. For some reason, perhaps it was me but I felt the timing was off with this book. Some parts were dragged out and boring then it sped up and major things happened so fast I literally almost missed them. The ending definitely felt rushed like she needed to wrap this up with a bow and end it. What a rollercoaster this book was . I Loved this series and so looking forward to reading Persie Merlin. I did notice a bit of an error and being a huge Stargate geek I had to point it out. The 'Stargate. Kurt Russell' Finch referred to should have been spelt with one L All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate. I can happily say things aren't being too dragged out, we're starting to learn Katherine's plan, more of Harley's past and we actually meet Katherine. I was worried that we wouldn't see our bad guy and would continue lurking in the shadows forever a looming figure. She's actually pretty fun and I really like her, she's at that point of crazy where she's more annoyed that Harley got her dress dirty. I'm looking forward to Katherine becoming part of the story.

And the Harley Merlin world isn't over yet it continues with another person's I'm going to wait for a few more of them to come out before I contuine. That was fantastic! It was so good to read chapters split between Harley and Finch again! I love the bond that has festered between them since their mission on Eris Island and which has only grown stronger as we've gone on through the books, even when the two of them weren't always together. This book was wonderful. Why because best friends, Persie and Genie, are different. They are young, anxious to be on their own and fearless. Persie seems to be the first human being to purge Beasts. Moire important, she recognizes their uniqueness and personalities. In this book she purges dozens of Pixies who are mischievous, alert, aware beings. Persie can't abide putting them in boxes to power the beastiary. She dreams about how she would feel if she were in a glass enclosed box with no communication. When Magicals, including her best friend, Genie, disappear she calls upon her Pixies to help her find and return them.I experienced this book both in Kindle and audiobook format. The narrator is Amanda Ronconi, who does an excellent job acting out the dialogue for all the various characters, portraying with equal skill male and female voices and various national accents. This book comes with additional politics and different POVs, which makes it even more enjoyable. Things also get a bit darker, and Harley has to step up for all the people looking up to her. It is fun interacting with all the characters in the first book and meeting new ones. You will get angry at the incompetence of those supposed to protect the kids from the Ryder twins while appreciating Harley for all her efforts. It is also refreshing to see that Garret and Wage are starting to resolve their past issues. Hopefully, these two will be able to work together in the future.
