About this deal

This was fascinating to me. The author presented more than I ever expected about Hefner. So much history, social and cultural attitudes were affected. Hefner was in the middle whether he wanted to be or not. The rise of feminism and women’s liberation led to the launching of several magazines also meant as counterpoints in culture. Hef also clung to impossible double standards. If one of the girls he was juggling arrived home while he was otherwise engaged, his staff would cut the music piped into the mansion to alert him of her approach. Hef wanted his consorts to be spotlessly faithful, but when one of them insisted he do the same, the publisher would "stomp his feet and beat his pipe on the table and turn purple in the face."

Hugh Hefner - Wikipedia

Hefner was known to friends and family simply as "Hef". [41] He married Northwestern University student Mildred ("Millie") Williams in 1949. They had a daughter named Christie (b. 1952) and a son, David (b. 1955). [42] Before the wedding, Mildred confessed that she'd had an affair while he was away in the army. He called the admission "the most devastating moment of my life." A 2006 E! True Hollywood Story profile of Hefner revealed that Mildred allowed him to have sex with other women, out of guilt for her own infidelity and in the hope that it would preserve their marriage. The couple divorced in 1959. [43] [44]Watts, Steven (March 23, 2009). Mr Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream. Hoboken, New Jersey: Wiley. p.22. ISBN 978-0-470-50137-5. Hefner was very distantly related to the 41st and 43rd presidents of the United States, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, respectively. [85] Death [ edit ] overall, i wanted to see less generalized discussions of hef's role in the sexual revolution and the counterculture of the 60s, and more analysis about how specifically he helped foster, as the author argues throughout, said cultural changes. Mr. Hefner married the former Millie Williams in 1949. Before they divorced, they had a son, David, and a daughter, Christie, who would later become a key leader in his media empire. The story of Playboy is also a direct parallel to the story of America, born at a time of great rebirth, optimism and progress - the roaring 50's - when millions fulfilled the American Dream of a better life. Many great brands were born at this time, and Hef's boat rose with the tides. The Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award was created by Christie Hefner "to honor individuals who have made significant contributions in the vital effort to protect and enhance First Amendment rights for Americans."
