About this deal

I think I would have preferred this if I hadn't read XX first. The best bit about this book is that it uses clever images, font changes and sizes to supplement the story, but this also happens in XX, and XX is, to me, a superior story. TBL is an urban fantasy, in a similar vein to Mieville's Kraken, with a touch of Boy's Own adventure. It's a solid mystery with a mostly satisfying ending. It does feel like there needs to be a sequel, which I will eagerly await. A PIECE OF 44781 IS IN THE NATIONAL COLLECTION". 13 December 2019 . Retrieved 18 September 2022– via PressReader. was fitted with boiler 12462 from new which had the top feed on the 2nd ring, the other two had later pattern boilers.Despite sitting comfortably in the speculative fiction realm, much of this book feels generally eccentric but still grounded in the real world. Hughes’ love of the topics he’s writing about showing through strongly in the way Austin turns to his nostalgic memories of childhood enthusiasms in the form of the locomotive-obsessed Smokebox Club, and Rutherford’s earnest, somewhat pretentious musings on Brutalist architecture and his dreamlike sense of his personality merging with that of the city. The Smokebox Club in particular, with its mysterious leader ‘The Chief Engineer’, jaunty theme tune, secret hand sign and beautifully elegant logo/membership badge, is an absolute delight. The more heavily sci-fi elements of the plot do gradually develop though, taking things closer in some respects to the feel of XX towards the latter stages of the book and balancing that grounding in reality with some interesting, high-concept ideas. This definitely isn’t a hard-SF novel, but rather its own unique blend that doesn’t quite feel like anything else. WHAT ON EARTH!!! WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON!??!?! THIS BOOK! THIS BOOK IS MADDNESS! MADDNESS I TELL YOU!

The Black Locomotive’ by Rian Hughes: A Book Review ‘The Black Locomotive’ by Rian Hughes: A Book Review

My word that was something completely different. And by different, I mean to any book I have ever seen, let alone read. I’m not really sure where to start with this review as my brain is still recovering from the wringing out it has just received but I shall endeavour to try. this book, too, it seems. As with Rutherford’s own studio quarters full of an industrial past of reinforced aggregate or heavy haulage and there is also his own ready-made installation (but of what, I will not say) plus his paintings or drawings associated with this so-called fiction book’s embedded project. Old technology gives way to the new. Progress is inevitable – but is it more fragile than its inhabitants realise? Subplot on the origins of the anomaly was very interesting, but occupied a short space in the book. In 1941, locomotive No. 5425 was severely damaged in a Luftwaffe air raid. It was subsequently repaired at Crewe Works. [21]In all cases names are historically inaccurate, i.e. they have all been applied since preservation. Some engines might still have their names but where marked indicates that they currently do not carry them. Either for authenticity or other reasons like the engine is running in another identity.
