And then we have Clara. Poor, Clara! I loved her character so much. She is the perfect mix of suspicious and trusting, hopeful and discouraged, confused and intelligent. Everyone should want a significant other like Clara. She questions the things we all would, but defaults to being trusting. She can’t turn her feelings off and on just because she has learned something new about Luke. And she is dogged in her pursuit of the truth. I was team Clara, cheering her on when she discovered new clues, and pulling the covers under my chin when she was in danger. I really like if the story has many twists and turns. And yes guys, this book has a lot of unexpected secrets, and lies. Every so often you start a book and you just know it is going to be one of the few that stand out from the rest. That is how this was for me. There were two really suspense filled stories going on with alternating chapters. Clara and her boyfriend Luke had recently moved into together and suddenly Luke goes missing. Little by little Clara finds out some disturbing information regarding Luke. Did Luke leave on his own accord or has he met a deadly fate?

My breath caught in my throat and I let out a soft moan. She knows, I thought. She knows where we've been. Maya and Rebecca Ward are both accomplished physicians, but that’s where the sisters’ similarities end. As teenagers, they witnessed their parents’ murder, but it was Rebecca who saved Maya from becoming another of the gunman’s victims. The tragedy left Maya cautious and timid, settling for a sedate medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca became the risk taker. We are surrounded by lies. They are incorporated into the worldview of our culture. We daily absorb them, and these lies can have deadly effects on individuals, societies and whole civilisations. What an excellent dilemma this book poses! Two sisters, one married one not. The married sister comes up missing, presumed dead. Living sister falls in love with her brother-in-law, only to find the suspected dead sister. How do you return from all of that? How do you go on? This book poses all of those questions and more! Leavings you thinking about decisions and consequences long after finishing the book!As far as “psychological thriller” goes, spot on. Obviously. Hence, the PTSD thing. This is such a good read and I’m honestly bummed that I had to stop halfway because I was wholeheartedly enjoying the story. If you’re looking for a great thriller, here it is.

So this book uses dual timelines to tell the story. In the present day, Clara's boyfriend, Luke, has disappeared. The book switches between that story line and the past in which Beth is having a difficult time (that's putting it mildly) raising her daughter Hannah. While you could say the main mystery would be what happened to Luke, there were so many other things that keep you guessing throughout the book. Definitely a lot of layers to the story.Camilla Way’s The Lies We Told has one of the most accurate and appropriate titles in recent thriller history. The plot is a multilayered maze of lies, half-truths, secrets, and vengeful agendas that converge in unexpected ways. Full of emotional grit and uncertainty, this is the kind of novel that explores how people can do horrible things for the right reasons and how even short-lived infidelities can sometimes have lingering effects.

This book had so many things that I love in a psychological thriller. First off, a true sociopath, one that is so incredibly anti-social and inherently evil that she can’t be ignored. Secondly a host of other characters, well described, that I felt I cared about and wanted to see how this would all play out.T]he construction and pacing are solid, staying just far enough ahead of the reader to be fun, and offering, in the last quarter, a buffet table of twists.”— New York Times Book Review One element that walks a fine line between being superb and being the only thing that bogs down the narrative is the attention to detail. When it comes to emotional grit and conveying the desperation of Luke’s family as well as Clara, Way shines:
