About this deal

Focusing is neat and smooth, and the binoculars remain steadfast in focus. (Image credit: Gemma Lavender)

DPD have taken steps to minimise the spread of the COVID-19 virus and will no longer obtain signatures at the time of delivery, instead: Choosing the right magnification for your desired uses is also extremely important as it affects the way a binocular performs in a whole host of different ways. These are for a Christmas present but I’ve had a sneaky look through them myself and they seem great. I looked down the garden and could see the spots on the ladybirds painted on my bird feeders out on the tree! That was amazing. Anyway, I hope my son likes them. Really small so can be taken and used anywhere. Pentax UD 9x21 If you're struggling to choose between the easier-to-hold 8x magnification or 10x magnification for closer views (especially noticeable on the moon and planets), then here's a compromise — 9x magnification, offering most of the benefits of both. ★★★½

As would be expected from the lower 8x magnification and because they are a porro prism, the Pentax has a wider field of view than the Steiner's, which is noticeable, but not a huge amount.

If you’re not too invested in observing the night sky, but want somewhat magnified views wherever you go, whether that’s of a bright night-sky object, a bird in a tree or a lion on a safari, then we wholeheartedly recommend this binocular — provided you stay out of torrential rain. If you have particularly unstable hands, which is often the case with children or the elderly, it is often wise to keep the power to a maximum of 8x or preferably lower. Bought as a present for my wife who loves her bird watching, she absolutely loves these lightweight compact binoculars. A great buy thanks

I asked this question in a hurry. We were at the airport waiting to fly to Peru, on a once in a lifetime trip was planned to the last detail. When separated into monoculars, two users can benefit from the additional light-gathering power over the human eye, making it easier to spot more stars and celestial objects. However, this is a rather expensive option for buying low-power instruments — you'd be better off buying two decent pairs of binoculars instead. Although they may not be a top recommendation, we've included these binoculars for their cleverness and novelty factor. However and as you probably know, the pupils in your eyes expand in low light conditions, allowing them to take in more light. Their maximum diameter varies from person to person and with age, but in general, we take 7mm as being a good rule of thumb. Thus if you want a binocular with an excellent low light performance, you need a large exit pupil of around 7mm. To achieve this you either need extremely large lenses or a very low power, or a combination of both. So, for example, a popular low light binocular is a 7x50 and has a 7.1mm exit pupil (50÷7). Image quality is much better than I expected too so these binoculars are an all round winner. Of course, if you do a side by side comparison with some exotic Leica or Zeiss, you will see a difference but my priority is size and weight. Anything over 250g would not make it out the door.Like the magnification, the objective lens diameter makes a big difference to how a binocular performs and as a result which areas it is most suitable for use. This relates to the size of the pupils in your eyes and how wide they are dilated depending on the available light and is in relation to the size of the shaft of light exiting the eyepieces. Handy, travel-friendly, and highly affordable, the Celestron UpClose G2 16x32 will suit anyone after close-ups of birds, animals, and objects in the middle distance and they’re good enough for occasional use in vast landscapes and at sea, too.
