About this deal

The classic, human-scale account of the soldiers who fought in World War II,by Pulitzer Prize winner Ernie Pyle—America’s most famous and most loved war correspondent—featuring a new introduction by David Chrisinger, the author of the new Ernie Pyle biography, The Soldier’s Truth

Birmingham Phoenix and London Spirit play tomorrow, and we'll be live with you from 14:45 BST for the women's game. The world-class is also home to an elite sports medicine centre, the Hampshire Wellbeing Centre, the rapidly expanding amateur boxing club, Poseidon and the Hedge End Running Club. Michael Hogan's bat maker is actually a friend of mine, but alas the veteran seamer is very much a tail ender. Hogan dances down and attempts to hit Matt Parkinson down the ground but misses and Phil Salt whips off the bails. (Not a reflection on the quality of your workmanship, Danny). On performances of Smeed and Brookes: "It's awesome because you want to be performing and winning, but if you're bringing through a few youngsters while you're doing that it's great. She was the most prolific Englishwoman in last year's tournament and only two players scored more than her 244 runs.Earlier on Saturday, Northern Superchargers advanced from an abandoned women's eliminator against Welsh Fire by virtue of finishing higher in the group stage and will meet Southern Brave in the final. We can't take anything for granted. Just because we beat them here doesn't mean we're going to roll them over on Saturday."

Update 7/15/23. Starts out compulsively readable, but the daily combat reports get grim in a hurry. Book of its time. I'm not at all sure I will finish it. . . Lintott, who only signed his first pro contract at 27 last year, bowls wrist spin with his left hand, which is a rare talent and can be confusing for batters to face. Along with all those who fought or resisted Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, the American soldiers who served in the Second World War helped preserve for us a world in which human decency and liberty are possible. In “Brave Men,” Ernie Pyle, a war correspondent embedded with our forces in North Africa, Italy and France, helps us understand, eighty years on, what they did and endured. An account of the war can serve no higher purpose than to inspire our abiding gratitude to those soldiers, and in this “Brave Men” succeeds magnificently. Ernest Taylor Pyle was an American journalist who wrote as a roving correspondent for the Scripps Howard newspaper chain from 1935 until his death in combat during World War II. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944.Then at the end, take the pace off and vary my pace. Sometimes you have to take a gamble and hope it plays off." Manchester Originals captain Jos Buttler on BBC Two: "We're through, and that's the main thing. We are disappointed to lose tonight but we're still in it. A beautiful piece of timing from stand-in captain Leus du Plooy brings him a boundary through wide long-on. He also, bless him, wants to ensure that every single soldier he meets gets described and recognized for the sake of their families and friends at home. As someone living three generations after the war, this drives me nuts. We get longer introductions to people we will never interact with in the book again than one would to the main character in most narrative fiction This time the ball tails in to hit leg stump, it's far too good for Tymal Mills and the Phoenix win by 53 runs.

Here's what saved it: I have no quotations that demonstrate these two issues by virtue of the fact that I had more than enough quotes I loved to save. In the second half of the book in particular (so hold on if you're having trouble with the over-detailed description), the war gets more extreme in its highs and lows - and Pyle finds the emotional, narrative balance. This is Pyle at his strongest. Anya Shrubsole may have retired from England duty but the pace bowler, who has a lethal inswinger, still has plenty to give.

BEEFY'S

Southern Brave were branded favourites for the men’s competition after last year’s draft and, while the withdrawal of Andre Russell is obviously a blow, it is still difficult to look past Mahela Jayawardene’s charge. Andre Russell smashed 64 from just 23 balls to set up a comfortable victory for Manchester Originals over defending champions Southern Brave.
