In total we spent a few weeks testing 41 games and we'll take a look at the side-by-side comparison across all those games in a second. But if we look at an average graph, calculated using the geomean, we see that on average DDR5 memory offered just a 3% boost at 1080p, 2% at 1440p and then one percent at 4K.

Also, chances are 12th-gen Core series owners won't feel the need to upgrade until 14th-gen hits at the absolute earliest, and at that point you'd need a new motherboard anyway. Cyberpunk 2077 was tested using the medium quality preset and at 1080p we see a reasonably large performance difference between the various memory configurations. The DDR4-2400 gear two configuration completely brakes performance as simply switching to gear 1 boosted the average frame rate by 41%. Corsair Dominator Titanium First Edition DDR5-6600 C32 2x32GB Review: Abundant Capacity And Performance Moving to 1440p neutralizes the test results with the exception of the gear 2 mode for the DDR4-2400 memory which dropped the average frame rate by 13%.Based on those figures, DDR5 does very little to aid the Core i9-12900K across a wide range of today's games. If Raptor Lake does end up being a big step forward and worth upgrading to, you'd be best off just buying a new Z790 motherboard with DDR5 memory and selling the DDR4 gear second hand as it will retain its value well, Intel motherboards always do due to heavy product segmentation. At that point you should be getting a better motherboard anyway and much higher quality DDR5 memory at a significantly better price. High-performing kits still command a premium though and the G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB DDR5-6400 2x 16GB kit is certainly a speedy offering. It’s not the first 6400MHz kit on the market, but we believe it’s the first to come with a CAS latency of just 32, and one of very few kits at any speed to come with a CL that low. Replacing a data center's DDR4 with DDR5 saves power of up to 1TWh annually. The on-DIMM PMIC further boosts

The UL Procyon benchmark, which runs a consistent, repeatable workload on a licensed install of Adobe Premiere Pro, shows that more bandwidth can help matters, with DDR5-4800 taking the win there. The results of this test still indicate some gains for reduced latency when moving from CAS 22 to CAS 14 at DDR4-3200, however. elzm74yxzp4swx5bs7cq-p4s4el-cd1a19887-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yxzp4swx5bt4ka-p0qvim-2e8a5e71e-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yxzp4swx5bt6hq-pzy1yp-35d9d01e0-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yxzp4swx5bt7mq-p1duy0-1060998fa-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yxzp4swx5bucja-p0twy9-19851792c-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yxzp4swx5bzqza-pn76ir-1c0c55ff7-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yxzp4swx5bzsda-pqodge-888ec876f-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, If it really was DDR5-6400, then CL40 would be faster than DDR4-3200 CL22. Even if it's DDR5-4800, CL40 should only be ~20% worse. A height of 44mm means the module won’t come in the way of other components in your PC, particularly if you’re using a liquid cooler. Taller RAM modules sometimes make it problematic for the water pipes. That wouldn’t be a problem with the FURY Renegade. Enabling the XMP Profile

The DDR5 kit falls as far behind in latency as it gets ahead in bandwidth. That interplay of results was expected, but we’re still hoping for a few surprises in actual applications. So, onward to those... Application and Gaming Tests

DDR5: The Best Memory for PC Gaming | TechSpot DDR4 vs. DDR5: The Best Memory for PC Gaming | TechSpot

The CAS latency or CL timings are only part of the equation, so you can't judge RAM's performance based on the CL timings alone, which is why a lot of people have been confused by DDR5 and it's seemingly high CL figures. Memory speed (frequency) and the CL timings (latency) play a critical role in system performance. For anyone looking to maximize the value of an Alder Lake processor, DDR4 memory is what you'll be after, and there isn't any point as far as we can tell going beyond DDR4-4000. So if DDR4-3200 CL16 and DDR4-4000 CL18 are priced fairly similarly in your region, you might as well go with 4000. Things have changed now, for the better that is. DDR5 is now well into its second-generation. The latest generation of CPUs from both AMD and Intel support DDR5, along with their accompanying motherboards. So, a more accepting ecosystem works in favor of DDR5. Prices of DDR5 RAM kits, while still being on the higher side, are slightly more reachable to the mainstream consumer. Supply has increased steadily. However, we still feel that more options would have been better, RAM producers themselves have been slow to catch up to the DDR5 train. elzm74yccuqwcx5btaca-p2p13t-2edd5f4d6-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yccuqwcx5buakq-p7s1ie-7095e2510-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yccuqxax5b2o7q-partxm-0ba99e22d-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yccuqxax5bs6fa-pnivpg-c492934bb-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yccuqxax5bt5qq-pcrjf9-bdc24fa26-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yccuqxax5bzp4q-pkl6rx-fb475a90e-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, elzm74yxzp4swx5bs4ga-p9xzbs-ed47165ae-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, Clearly DDR5 isn't worth it right now, but we already knew that. Pricing aside, DDR5 has little to offer over DDR4 in today's games with an Alder Lake processor for the most part. That being the case, budget conscious shoppers should only consider DDR5 at a 10%, or maybe a 20% price premium at most, when going for a flagship part like the Core i9-12900K.DDR5 memory's availability problem is related to a shortage of power management components. It's not the same as we're seeing with GPUs, which also have a demand problem which exacerbates the shortage. Supply will certainly improve throughout 2022 for DDR5, something that we cannot say for sure about graphics cards. To speed up design, development and qualification of next-generation DDR5-based platforms, Micron today launched its DR5 Technology Enablement Program together with Cadence, Montage, Rambus, Renesas, and Synopsys. Qualified participants of the program will be able to get DDR5 devices and modules, module components (DDR5 RCD, DDR5 DB, DDR5 SPD-Hub, DDR5 PMIC, DDR5 temperature sensor, etc.), data sheets, electrical and thermal models as well as consultation on signal integrity and other technical support. Ryan Smith - Tuesday, July 14, 2020 "So on-die ECC is a bit of a mixed-blessing. To answer the big question in the gallery, on-die ECC is not a replacement for DIMM-wide ECC. Entry level DDR5 isn't that impressive due to its high timings and resulting latency disadvantage. The Team kit almost completely overcomes that, and all but matches a DDR4-3600 C16 kit, though of course it features much greater bandwidth, which some applications clearly appreciate. We recently reviewed G.Skill’s Trident Z5 DDR5-6000 C36 kit and that's a good competitor for the Team kit, though it uses Samsung ICs vs. the Hynix modules of the Team kit.

JEDEC finalizes DDR5 standard: Terabyte-sized DDR5-6400

As for DDR5, there's little point investing in it right now unless you simply want the best of the best, at which point you're going for 6000+ spec memory which costs roughly the same amount as the 12900K processor. We see little reason to go with the more affordable 4800 to 5600 memory if you're gaming, especially given you're probably going to be GPU limited more often than not. Then with DDR5 we see that despite the much higher operating frequency, latency doesn't improve over what we see with DDR4 and this is because the Alder Lake memory controller can't run at a 1:1 ratio with the DRAM, forcing us to use gear 2 mode for all DDR5 testing. Even at 6200, we're still looking at a latency of 63ns, which is higher than even DDR4-3200 CL16 memory. So for now DDR5 will thrive in applications and games that require big memory bandwidth and aren't as sensitive to latency. Call of Duty Vanguard is another game where we find a negligible difference between the two memory types, even at 1080p. So it would seem this game isn't limited by memory bandwidth. clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-75-41-190_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604425120-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-75-41-190_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604425189-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-75-41-190_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604427540-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-75-41-190_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604424875-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-75-41-190_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604425270-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net,The idea of this test is not to take a few premium kits and then manually adjust timings and frequencies, which is what we've done in the past. Instead we want to test memory kits you can actually buy and see how those perform and compare. We reached out to Corsair and submitted a long shopping list of kits that we wanted to test and they were gracious enough to help us out.
