About this deal

The apostle Paul confirmed God as Judge when he declared, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men” (Rom. 1:18). Paul continued this concept in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death.”

Interestingly, no one really knows how to pronounce this most important of God’s names. Because it was considered too holy to utter, down through the ages YHVH was vowel-pointed with the vowels for Adonai. Today almost all Jewish people automatically say “Adonai” whenever they see this name in the Sidur(Jewish prayer book) or Scriptures. Some will simply say “Ha-Shem,” which means “the name.”

Soham Mantra Benefits

When God identified Himself as I AM WHO I AM, He stated that, no matter when or where, He is there. It is similar to the New Testament expression in Revelation 1:8, “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.’” This is true of Him for all time, but it would have been especially appropriate for a message in Moses’ day to a people in slavery and who could see no way out. I AM was promising to free them, and they could count on Him! God’s holiness requires that He hate sin. He warned Adam that if he disobeyed, or sinned, he would die. This truth can be seen in Genesis 3. After they sinned, Adam and Eve still evidenced life but clearly were spiritually dead. They attempted to cover their shame with fig leaves, pass the blame for their sin to each other, and ultimately hide from God Himself. They were spiritually dead, which is the natural condition of every physical descendant of Adam and Eve since their sinful rebellion against a holy God.

One implication of “I am who I am” is that within us lies an element of choice—you can be whatever you want to be if you define yourself by your understanding. God…revealed to Moses His unique identity to assure the Israelites that He would bring them into the land of their inheritance. The Lord is my Shepherd: I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever” ( Psalms 23:1-6). Nisargadatta's teachings are grounded in the Advaita Vedanta interpretation of the Advaita idea Tat Tvam Asi, literally "That Thou Art", (Tat = "Absolute", Tvam = "You", Asi = "are") meaning "You are (actually) Absolute" (who think otherwise). Nisargadatta also had a strong devotion to his own guru, and suggested the path of devotion, Bhakti yoga, to some of his visitors. By using the translation “I will become whatsoever I may become,” we see the relationship of this phrase to Yahweh –“He who becometh.” They both use the word “become.” The use of ehyeh asher ehyeh in Exodus 3:14 was God’s way of assuring and pledging to Moses and Israel that God would become whatever they needed Him to become. Once in a while there is some practical advice for spiritual practice. Usually it involves holding on to the "I am" feeling.

And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the Lord of hosts in Shiloh” ( 1 Samuel 1:3). I am That: Conversations with Nisargadatta Maharaj (Conversation 98). Death gives freedom and power. To be free in the world, you must die to the world. Then the universe is your own; it becomes your body, an expression and a tool. The happiness of being absolutely free is beyond description.”
