About this deal

Rose observes the departure from her small town of German troops heading for the eastern front against the Soviet Union. (Hitler launched a surprise offensive, Operation Barbarrosa against Stalin's Russia in June 1941). Children wave, soldiers smile and Rose carries a little swastika flag as one of the crowd. We've written two blogs on topics that might interest Rose Blanche visitors. If you like to hike, there are some great trails near Rose Blanche. I have had Rose Blanche sitting on my bookshelves for years, but I have avoided writing about it for the same reason The Boy in the Striped Pajamas hasn't shown up here - they are both problematic texts with good intentions. Soldier; I am happy to be fighting for Germany. Our army will beat the Russians. Long live Adolf Hitler!

Definitely would recommend this one to everyone. However, maybe not the youngest children, I think this may fit older kids better. This is a fantastic whole class reading resource to explore the Rose Blanche story with your Year 5 / Year 6 when learning about World War 2. Innocenti elabora magistralmente una correspondencia simbólica entre la duración de la guerra y las estaciones del año: la guerra empieza justo antes del duro invierno y termina en primavera cuando todo renace. The book is beautifully illustrated but I found the story unsatisfying. The end didn’t work for me; I wanted more. I am fine with disturbing stories, especially if aimed at a suitably mature audience, but this sparse tale is awfully dark for the picture book age set. And, while as an adult I understood exactly what happens, I don’t think most children will without an explanation. If you read this to young children, be prepared to have a discussion, and I don’t recommend this for young kids, not at all. The first settlers in Rose Blanche arrived and probably settled in 1810, though the French had held seasonal premises in the area in the 18th century. Rose Blanche was first settled for its sheltered harbours and close location to fishing grounds. Roberto Innocenti is an Italian illustrator who was brought up as a child during the Second World War. He aimed to devise a story for children based on his own childhood experience which would reflect a child's incomplete comprehension of war. Rose secretly takes food to the prisoners day by day, even as civilian living conditions deteroriate and returning wounded soldiers indicate likely defeat. Eventually soviet troops invade the locality (1944 or 1945) and Rose dies in crossfire.

Contrast the illustration with Rose placing a flower on the barbed wire with the last picture showing the return of spring. Invite suggestions from pupils about why Innocenti decided to end his book with this picture. Was it realistic that her flower would have survived on the wire? Why did he include it? Written in the third person, this book follows a young girl living in Germany at the time of the second world war. A heart-breaking story which provokes a huge emotional impact.

This book portrays the real heartbreak of war and the effect of soldiers going off to war with food being rationed. The outstanding illustrations in this book really highlighted the hours of the war, especially for Jewish people. Little boy; I must escape. I am very frightened. Lots of Germans hate us Jews. What will they do to us if our family are sent away? The road along the south coast ends at Rose Blanche. Most communities east of here on the south coast are onlyRose Blanche is such a powerful and emotional picture picture book. It is about a young girl, Rose Blanche, who has to come to terms with a war starting but not quite understanding why. It is very interesting to see a war book told through the perspective of a German child.
