The first stills were made from copper and the brothers began distilling their own whisky. In 1892, the MacAskill brothers sold the distillery to the MacDonald brothers, who had been running a successful distillery in nearby Portree. Under their ownership, the distillery was expanded and the first Talisker whisky was released in 1897. Today, Talisker offers some of the most favoured single malt whiskies in the world. It is still made in Carbost, using the same traditional methods that have been used since the distillery was founded. The MacAskill brothers have long since passed, but their legacy lives on in the bottle of Talisker that continues to be enjoyed by whisky lovers around the world. If fish isn’t your thing, this whisky goes tremendously well with grilled steak. The smoky flavours go really well with almost any red meats, especially beef. Dare I say, this would a wonderful pairing with some sort of cured meat, charcuterie starter with a big old wedge of melon.

Storm’ was the first of three no-age-statement whiskies which was released in 2013. Each have their own nuances within the range, with the Storm edition exemplifying the darker, smokier aspects of the Carbost distillery character. On 12 August 1948 a fire broke out in the store of the distillery. No whisky was destroyed, but grain in store and over 100 empty barrels were lost. [7] As well as replacing subsistence farmers with more profitable sheep, another of the MacAskill’s money-making schemes was distilling. In 1830, they opened their Talisker distillery in Carbost using the cleared populace as its workforce.
