About this deal

When I wrote about Hardinge’s A Face Like Glass , I noted that her villains are rarely people, but broken societies that have stopped asking whether they can be fixed. Raddith is a society that largely doesn’t realize how broken it is. Her young protagonists are outcasts of a sort, but not the same kind of outcast as a curser. It is easy to assume, when you are young and naive or sheltered or have spent some time as a bird, that people who have been rejected by society have been treated this way for valid reasons.

You have of course heard that some people in Raddith are able to curse their enemies. It sounded so picturesque when you were reading about it at home, like a fairytale.I also appreciate Hardinge's morally ambiguous characters - none of them simply good or evil, but each motivated by a complex blend of history, chance, and personality - and I really like the way her worlds manage to be spooky and dark but not hopeless. The citizens of Raddith have been granted an unusual and deadly power by the spider-like creatures known as the Little Brothers – they can bestow a curse on anyone who they truly, soul-deeply hate. These curses can take many forms – often gruesome but not necessarily deadly – such as making a cruel employers’ hands pour with blood or transforming unwanted step-children into birds.

I expected nothing less from Frances Hardinge… Fairytale unique story, loveable characters, crazy imagination but also felt so interesting and addictive, those are all I got in “The Unraveller” VAMPIRE LAIRS [ TIMECODE LINK] – There are 18 Vampire Lairs in total, which are one-use rooms to regen Health, Rage and gun ammunition. Included next to it is a link with the timecode for that lair in the All Lairs video. Once the tanks blow up, you can use the scaffolding on the wall between the two tanks to wall-jump up. Continue forward and you'll reach a point where the platform in front of you blows up so you have to rail grind down to move forward. There you'll find another machine gun turret shooting you. Kill him but don't move forward. The Wilds, which run along the coast of Raddith, are a place of mystery and magic and legend, home to beings like marsh horses and Dancing Stars and, most importantly, Little Brothers, which are kind of like spiders, except not really. They weave and they have many legs, but they can also give people the power to curse others. “The curse then nestles in the host’s soul like an unhatched egg, growing in power, until the curser is ready to unleash it upon an enemy.” Even if you didn’t dwell on the past, however, sometimes the past dwelt on you. Sometimes it remembered you and came after you for revenge.” Kellen does not fully understand his talent, but helps those transformed maliciously—including Nettle. Recovered from entrapment in bird form, she is now his constant companion and closest ally. Liz Hyder, author of The Gifts It’s gothic and twisty and witty and gripping: dark and delicious and fresh and I loved it.
