That’s just one of the things you have to get used to when learning Japanese. The language also heavily relies on particles and there are 188 of these in Japanese! The authors do an excellent job of combining complicated linguistic explanations replete with examples of both correct and incorrect sentences. Everything is easy to handle, even for beginners. Japanese grammar does not seem as foreboding and complicated with this excellent book at hand.As another reviewer mentioned, this is not a textbook, so it doesn't start you from the beginning and gradually work you up. It's a reference book to look through for additional information. Given that this book doesn't have problems to solve, I recommend taking notes! I haven’t gone through those yet (although I do own the second one), so I won’t talk too much about them here unless I feel it’s necessary. I also love the use of many various names in the example sentences repeated throughout the book--helps to remember kanji names.

These books are one of the most useful resources a student of Japanese can own. When it comes to understanding a grammar point you've learned or tried to learn, they're the best, hands down. Even better than these fabled interwebs. The Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar should be a part of every Japanese language student's arsenal. Intermediate and Advanced, not so much, though if you make it that far you should add those to your collection as well.

Pretty much everything you'd ever want to know about a grammar point is included, the images above don't really do this dictionary justice. I think the reason is that grammar is an abstract concept. At least for me, it always took a little extra work to remember it compared to other vocabulary like nouns or verbs. That said, Tae Kim’s guide is popular online for a reason. It explains pesky grammar concepts using informal speech, which is rarely done in textbooks. This is especially useful for beginners who want to easily understand the natural way of speaking Japanese.

The way that I used this book was to have it as a reference. Anytime I would run into a new piece of grammar that I hadn’t seen before, I would go to the book and look it up. Most people won't have any need for this book, though I guess I've had to use it on rare occasion. The third book also levels up in difficulty with the example sentences and notes, though that's to be expected. It's assuming you're an advanced student of Japanese, after all! VerdictIf there's one thing we seem to focus on a lot at Tofugu, it's online resources. If you're learning Japanese, you can get almost everything you need online. Online textbooks, resources, apps, and even tutors can be acquired. Physical textbooks, dictionaries, and flashcards are becoming a thing of the past. What I’ve heard from other people who own all three is that the beginner book is the essential one to get, and that you probably only need the other two if you’re planning on taking the N1 or N2 of the JLPT.
