About this deal

Clean all parts according to the instruction manual. Some removable parts might be dishwasher-safe. The baking time will probably be a bit longer than what your recipe calls for if you use a full-size (e.g., 8” round) pan; smaller pans will require less time. If you do a like-for-like comparison of chips cooked in a deep fat fryer to those cooked in an air fryer, the latter absorbs significantly less oil and therefore, has fewer calories. So if you’re swapping deep frying for air frying, you’ll definitely be making a positive change to your diet, with a significant reduction in the amount of fat you consume. Fill the basket or tray with food of your choice. Handle it with extreme care as it could be very hot. Your fryer may have a bake cycle — if so, start there. You’ll notice the default temperature is probably lower than what you’d usually use to bake cake: The fryer is simply a very small convection oven, and convection ovens bake most effectively at a slightly lower temperature. My Gourmia’s bake cycle temperature is 325°F, which works well. If your fryer doesn’t have a bake cycle, set the temperature to 325°F.

When you're preparing food, it's important not to overfill your air fryer – it can lead to poor results such as undercooked or burned food. When you're making chips, it's better to only half-fill your air fryer to allow air to circulate better. We know this because in one of our air fryer cooking tests, we cook two batches of chips – one with the air fryer half-full and one at capacity. We find that the first batch is always better. 3. What can you cook in an air fryer? Each appliance works slightly differently, but here's the general process for getting started with a new air fryer: Why would you want to bake cake in your air fryer, as opposed to just using your regular oven? Four reasons: That depends on the model. The air fryers we’ve tested have a claimed capacity between 0.3kg and 2.2kg of food. If we assume an average person will eat approximately 250g of chips in one sitting, this is enough for anywhere between one and nine portions. What if you really, really want to bake a full-size 8” or 9” round layer? You can absolutely do it; you just have to take certain measures to prevent the top from burning while the center of the cake bakes. More on that later. 3) Determine time and temperatureGet set up for cooking. Insert the basket or tray inside the air fryer and set the desired temperature, cooking program and time of cooking. Look at the evenly baked interior of this lemon Bundt cake! Bundt cakes are ideally suited to air-fryer baking. We've collected and answered some of the most commonly asked questions around what air fryers are, how they work and the best way to use them. Manufacturers are known to highlight the health benefits of air fryers, even labelling them 'health fryers'. And while some of those claims are exaggerated, air fryers can be a healthier way to cook food due to the small amount or no oil used in the air frying process. Basket style with heating elements: tall, slim air-fryers feature a main unit with heating elements and fans. These have slide-out baskets or trays that slot into place inside. As they tend to have a smaller cooking area than oven-style fryers, in testing we found even results were more likely if the cooking was paused occasionally to rearrange or toss the food around. Some fryers will cut out automatically when you do this, some will need to be paused if you want accurate timings.

Air fryers are incredibly versatile appliances, so there aren't many things you can't cook in an air fryer. However, most air fryers do still require you to add oil to foods and sometimes, this might not be the healthiest cooking method you can choose. For example, air-fried broccoli isn’t as low in calories as steamed broccoli, which has no oil added. It’s therefore important to have air-fried foods as part of a balanced diet. Carefully remove the tray or basket from the air fryer after the beeping sound indicates the end of cooking. Be mindful of hot steam. Over the course of numerous experiments, I’ve retrofitted several of my favorite cake recipes to bake in the air fryer: one “neutral” vanilla (perfect for flavoring) and one chocolate. If you’re looking for a place to start, I recommend beginning with either of these recipes. My go-to vanilla air fryer cake: Chef Zeb’s Hot Milk Cake

Mini oven’ types: these models use convection or fan technology to cook food on flat, slide-in trays. As well as roasting, their extra air-frying functions circulate hot air around the food for more efficient crisping. These took up the space of an average-sized microwave. Some may also include rotisserie elements. First, you can simply drape aluminum foil atop the cake once it’s nearly as brown as you like; the foil will slow down any further browning while the center of the cake bakes through. While this option is simple, it’s not my first choice; the convection fan tends to blow foil around, leaving your cake only partially covered or (worse) dipping down into the batter.

Vegetables cook brilliantly in an air fryer and come out with a light, crisp texture. Fish and meat also cook well in air fryers, with some models featuring two cooking compartments, so you can cook your meat and vegetables at the same time, without them touching. An average air fryer takes between 20 and 40 minutes to produce golden-brown chips – but our tests found significant differences between the worst and best models – some can take much longer than the average. Turn or stir food while cooking. If your air fryer doesn't have an automatic stirring paddle, you'll want to carefully pull out the basket or tray and give the food a mix every now and then to ensure it's evenly cooked.

All air fryers come with some type of control panel. Often that will be a digital display with a variety of buttons, such as temperature control, on and off button and cooking program buttons. Your air fryer will also come with a basket or a tray to hold the food as it cooks. Whether you want to upgrade to a newer model, or your air-fryer has reached the end of its life, knowing how and where to dispose of your appliance is important to avoid creating more e-waste. Lazy Daisy Cake, with its broiled coconut and sugar topping, is a perfect match for the air fryer's top-down baking method. 5) Add a topping

But cake? Unless you’re talking lava cakes, you don’t want a crispy crust and an under-baked center. Still, given the right recipe and some simple tweaks, you can make very good cakes in your air fryer. And after baking over a dozen cakes in my Gourmia fryer, I’m ready to share my best air fryer cake practices. As touched on previously, air fryers use convection heat, much like a fan oven, but they have plenty of qualities that set them apart. The most obvious difference is their size – air fryers are a countertop appliance and therefore, have a smaller capacity than a traditional oven. This compact size, combined with a powerful heat source and fan, means they can cook food much faster than a traditional oven, often with more even results. Additionally, many air fryers require little-to-no preheating time, making them a convenient way to speed up meal prep, particularly for busy families. While most air fryers use a cooking basket that resembles that of a deep-far fryer, some air fryers, such as the Tower Xpress Pro Combo 10-in-1 or Proscenic T31, mimic the shape and set-up of a counter-top oven. My favorite pan for air fryer cakes is a half-size Bundt pan (about 3-cup working capacity). With its center tube funneling hot air not just around the edges of the cake but through its center, it’s a better match for the air fryer’s convection baking than the standard round cake pan. As for capacity, it holds a typical recipe calling for an 8” square, 8” round, or 9” round pan; or half of a sheet cake recipe ( 9” x 13” pan). Instead of the options above, try an edible topping baked straight into the cake. Not only does adding a topping midway through the bake keep your cake’s top crust from getting too brown, but it also means you don’t have to think about frosting later: Your cake is ready to enjoy right out of the fryer. Streusel topping transforms simple hot milk cake into a crumb coffeecake, protecting the cake's top crust from over-browning in the process. 4) Prevent the cake’s top crust from burning
