Make no mistake, this series falls squarely into the trash category. Not tongue-in-cheek-I-am-actually-so-above-this pseudo trash, but just plain trash. I mean, this guy tries hard but simply isn't the most gifted of artists. And yet - somehow - he has been able to capture the imagination of millions around the world with this story centered around an eerie mystery: Who are those "titans" that have nearly wiped out humanity? Where do they come from? What do they want? Apart from eating human beings, that is. I gotta say that the action and gruesomeness from the beginning really captured my attention, they're great and very dramatic!

I found the main character brash, whiny, and annoying, and the fact that he's prone to shouting and going nuts didn't endear him to me at all. The other characters were practically faceless/nameless to me and completely forgettable, except for Mikasa (thanks, FREEBIRD.) She's a badass and should be the real main character, and I suspect this will be the case with the way things end up, and I'm completely ok with that.It does everything a beginning is supposed to do, setting the world and its basic rules neatly and clearly, all in a very short amount of time and without losing coherency. I come already having watched the anime so I know what to expect of it and what will happen but the experience of seeing the details in the manga and the differences is gonna be fun as well as enlightening. One of the things I never thought I would do was read manga and yet here I am entering my second one and thoroughly enjoying it. The symbolic aspect of this shouldn´t be underestimated, let´s say Japanese and general East Asian isolationism during the last centuries. And in most of these cases, the monsters won because of technological and military superiority.
