Lagavulin produces some of the smokiest whisky Scotland has to offer, with the Lagavulin 16 Year Old standing as their most storied expression.

Since 2010, Lagavulin has sponsored the Islay Jazz Festival and began hosting the Lagavulin Jazz Festival in 2017. Each year, Lagavulin releases a limited-edition whisky to commemorate the festival. The latest 2021 edition was released in November 2021 with just 3,000 units available for sale. Lagavulin decommissioned their own floor maltings in 1974 and they began to get their malt from Port Ellen. The distillery ran a two day working week until the 1980s, which has resulted in some problems meeting the high demand for their whisky over the years. Overall, this Lagavulin is good whisky and you could do much worse in Travel Retail—although that’s not much of a benchmark, is it? Nevertheless, it is very satisfying. Peat and smoke with hints of vanilla, sea salt and citrus sweetness. It is not overwhelming but inviting and intriguing.
