About this deal

The interior of the hood is ribbed to avoid reflections and small portions of the exterior mount area are ribbed or rubberized for easier grip. While it may not be amazingly better than the other options from an optical perspective, the 24-70 Art lens is priced very significantly less than the Canon, Nikon and Sony counterparts. This lens will work well for photographing a wide variety of events, from parents capturing informal birthday parties at home to photojournalists covering formal galas at large venues.

As you can see, the intended plane of sharp focus remains in focus, so this issue will not be a significant one for many scenarios and focusing on a closer subject resolves the issue in many more. Consequently, I’ll have to reserve judgement on the Sigma’s AF performance for action photography, though I don’t have any reason to believe that there’s anything wrong with it. If you can accept the loss of stabilization and performance wide-open, the Tokina has an overall performance similar to the Sigma lens, yet boasts slightly higher peak sharpness, excellent transmission, and good control of lateral chromatic aberration. While the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM A is good performer and represents good value overall, it’s not quite what we expected from an Art series lens. Still, it has relatively uniform sharpness across the frame over all focal lengths, while levels of chromatic aberration, distortion, and vignetting are all well-controlled for this type of lens. At f/4, these two lenses are both extremely sharp and there is little differentiation in this regard aside from the Canon's still-better corner performance. The promise of Sigma Art lens quality coming to the 24-70mm focal length range along with an f/2.8 max aperture and optical stabilization had a large number of photographers signing up to add this lens to their kits immediately on announcement day. The above samples show 100% crops taken from near the top-left corner of the frame and the shape of these stars is neither round nor pin-point. Geometric distortion makes framing a scene with a straight horizon, such as the ocean, challenging as there are no lines parallel to the edges of the viewfinder or viewfinder gridlines, though cameras with electronic levels are advantageous for overcoming this issue.Architecture photographers are typically looking for linear-distortion-free lenses to keep their buildings and walls straight and though prime lenses are often utilized for this purpose, zoom lenses nearly always have near-distortion-free focal lengths ideal for such work. Adding OS significantly increases this lens' already great versatility and especially at f/4, this lens delivers very impressive image sharpness.

Focus accuracy and repeatability is critical to consistently produce sharp shots. Repeatability (the accuracy of focus on the same subject after repeated focus-acquisition) of this lens at 70mm focal length is very good (measured 99.1% in Reikan FoCal) with no outliers over a series of 40 shots. There is no focus variation whether the lens focuses from a closer distance or from infinity and I didn’t detect any hunting. At 70mm focal length the lens focuses in around 0.7 sec from infinity to 0.76m (1:10 magnification), which is as fast as the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di III but slower than the Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S (on a Z7) at 0.5 sec.

Vignetting

Usually a lens can be made compatible by the manufacturer via a firmware update, but this cannot be guaranteed. Thanks to its new VXD motor, autofocus performance is snappy, and focus breathing is also minimal. Tamron has made great strides to improve the overall look of the bokeh in this lens, something which was much maligned in the original version. It has the best magnification of any lens in this article at 0.37x, compared to the Sigma's 0.34x magnification. Stopping down to f/8 will yield only subtle improvements, primarily in the corners, across the entire focal length range. This lens has a relatively strong amount of lateral CA over most of its focal length range with 50mm being an approximate color magnification crossover point, where the least amount of this CA is exhibited.

Tamron offers the 28-75mm f2.8 Di III RXD from 2018 for about 730 EUR / 880 USD. It starts at 28mm which might not be wide enough for some purposes (see comparison below) but is almost 300g lighter and clearly cheaper than the Sigma. The lens earned a Recommended in my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 review. Although alternatives to the Sigma 24–70mm F2.8 DG DN Art lens differ depending upon whether you're an E-mount or L-mount shooter, it's a very solid offering for either mount. Its pricing simply blows manufacturer offerings from Sony and Panasonic out of the water, and despite its high-end build and performance, it's not a whole lot more expensive than consumer-grade offerings for either mount. The focal length range is highly useful, as is the wide aperture and the AF system may be my new Sigma favorite. The 24-70 Art lens is compact for its specs, it seems well built, including being inclement weather-ready and it has a high quality appearance.The extreme corner test results shown below are an attempt to make the lens look its best in the area of the image circle where it generally looks the worst. The Panasonic Lumix S PRO 24-70mm f2.8 works on Leica, Panasonic and Sigma L-mount cameras. It is larger and heavier than the Sigma and costs 2500 EUR / 2200 USD. The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art produces moderate barrel distortion at 24mm, transitioning to pincushion at 50mm and beyond. The degree of distortion is enough to be visible when shooting geometric subjects, but is only obvious at 24mm, and it's not difficult to correct this in raw processing software. Verdict
