About this deal

Even with the Sony A7S, which offered 4K video and crazy good high ISO performance, its 12mp sensor and same funky ergonomics made it difficult for the average professional to completely fall in love with.

Full-frame camera with 5-axis image stabilization - Sony UK

Eye-level composition is achieved via a crystal-clear 2.36million-dot, 0.5-inch EVF, one that's so good that it’s easy to forget you aren’t using an optical finder. In addition to this, there’s a helpful sensor just above the EVF window, which detects when the camera is held to the eye and switches power from the main screen to the finder accordingly. Helpfully, those using older (or third party) lenses that cannot communicate with the camera can input the focal length manually to use the in-camera stabilization system. Autofocus and start-up times are also up to 40% faster than those on the A7, the former thanks to a 117-point phase-detect AF system that works in combination with 25-point contrast-detect AF, ensuring sharpness no matter where the subject lies in the frame. Sony has also given the A7 II some of the video features of the A7S. For example, it can now record in XAVCS, AVCHD or MP4 formats. Picture Profiles offer the ability to set the gamma to Sony’s S-Log2 for reduced contrast and greater dynamic range, while the Time Code feature helps with scene identification and footage syncing from multiple cameras.

Our lab tests indicate that the A7 II is capable of resolving as much detail as the 28MP Samsung NX1 in lab conditions. Noise is also controlled well through the lower, middle and moderately high sensitivity settings. By ISO 6,400, there’s quite a bit of chroma noise visible in raw files viewed at 100% (when noise reduction is turned off). I’ll get into this Sony a7ii review in a minute, but first, let’s look at some of the history of Sony cameras.

Sony United ILCE-7M2 BODY / KIT Specifications | Cameras | Sony United

In October of 2013, Sony announced the Sony Alpha 7 and Sony Alpha 7R, a date that may be remembered later on as the actual start of the mirrorless revolution. These were the first two fullframe mirrorless options on the market, something many photographers had been eagerly waiting for. To compensate for the increased weight of the a7 II, the size and depth of the grip has been increased, resulting in a very comfortable camera to hold. The front and rear facing control dials have been substantially shrunken down and recessed into the camera body, making it nearly impossible to accidentally nudge them without knowing it, a frequent complaint of a7 users. The biggest news about the A7 II was that is was the first full-frame digital camera to feature in-body stabilisation. This means that the sensor can move to correct for accidental camera movements in five directions during the exposure. When a stabilised Sony lens is used, the stabilisation effect is optimised, but not cumulative: either one or the other system is used. In-body Image Stabilization: This gives you up to a 4 stop advantage when shooting in low light. I’ve shot sharp images at 1/15 of a second with this camera. Being one of only 2 full frame cameras on the market to offer image stabilization, the other being the Sony A99, this is huge. But, how good is it?

The great thing about sensor-based IS in a camera like the a7 II is the realm of possibilities it opens up for third-party, and adapted lens users.

Sony Alpha a7 II Review - Digital Photography Review

So should you expect similar image quality to what we've seen from the D750? Definitely not. For starters, they use comparable, yet different sensors and the D750's is likely newer. Also, its important to remember that camera companies process their Raw data in very different ways. In general, Sony Raw files are less versatile than Nikon ones. The reason being that the a7 II and Sony cameras do not provide lossless 14-bit Raw data like Nikon, Canon and most other manufacturers do. Sony instead uses lossy compression, and an odd implementation at that, resulting in all around-less malleable files than the competition. You can read more about Sony's Raw compression here. It's important to note that there is no way around this compression.I couldnt believe it!!!, never been able to do that before. There may be better allround ff options out there, but its still a hell of a camera for the money, just got to learn how to get the best out of it, like any new cam/ Not only do I use it on longer lenses, but it is amazingly handy on my 35mm and 50mm prime lenses when in low light situations and I have more wiggle room on shutter speed. My number one hesitationabout switching from a Canon DSLR to a Sony mirrorless was the limited lens selection offered by Sony. I started out with the Sony 28-70mm kit lens on the a7II and ended up selling the lens within a week. My images were coming out soft with the kit lens, so I wanted to give this camera a fair shot by experimenting with some of the best lenses available. You wouldn't necessarily say this was one of the best Sony cameras today, given the technical advances that have happened since then, but it's ideal for anyone shopping around for the cheapest full frame cameras right now.
