Few have the inherent sweetness, humor, and chemistry of its leads that you get with The Ghost and Mrs.

Their inevitable confrontation in The Overlook Hotel with psychic vampires (led by Rebecca Ferguson) lives up to the hype of the Kubrick film, King’s issues with that film, and how King himself reconciled that when he wrote the Doctor Sleep novel. It also creates the idea of normalcy in a relatable way, making it impossible for our imaginations to resist the rest.More recently, series with horror themes have found success when aimed at younger audiences – though many older viewers are still watching – and our appetite for horror is still going strong.

Vet Dr Chinnery (Mark Gatiss) tells of how his family is the subject of a curse that brings death to animals, while a former choirboy of Herr Lipp’s (Steve Pemberton) ran into a horde of vampires on an exchange trip. The wave of neo-slashers sparked by Wes Craven’s Scream had already run its course and it would still be a couple of years before other trends took hold, like the run of Japanese horror remakes like The Ring or the extreme cinema of Saw and Hostel, which seemed to reflect the darkening post-9/11 reality that other mainstream films were studiously avoiding. One of the scariest movies to come out of South Korea, A Tale of Two Sisters is one of the great mindfucks for this list.

It has more potency than a lot of other famous hauntings, if only because it has the benefit of being connected, however loosely, to an entire franchise of books, movies, and even TV shows.
