About this deal

English equivalent: Thierry into Terry, Mahieu into Mayhew, Crespin into Crippen, Descamps into Scamp. I was reluctant to read Rutherfurd’s work when I learned the typical timespan involved in each novel.

His clever use of identifying features for each family through time kept me oriented, but the characters themselves are each unique, flawed, and delightful. Rutherfurd, having celebrated at some length the growth of an English cathedral town (Sarum, 1987) and the turbulent history of Russia (Russka, 1991), offers a massive survey in fictional form of London's long history. Through the compelling lives and adventures of memorable characters - Julius, the small-time Roman coin forger, risking his life to find buried treasure; Dame Barnikel, who runs the tavern where Chaucer and his pilgrims carouse; Geoffrey Ducket, the founder of a dynasty whose members one day become peers of England; Edmund Meredith and the actors in Shakespeare's Globe Theatre; and little Lucy, living by Dickens's muddy Thames -- we watch London grow from its first beginnings and become part of the wonderful pageant that flows on still today. For this he has gained a huge amount of acclaim, both nationally and internationally, as his books travel worldwide.

I was hoping for that magical merging of history and fiction, which gives life to history and historical significance to life. a unique narrative exploration of the city's development from humble trading post to the hub of a mighty empire, and the very human story of the men and women who made it great. Being well established for many years now as well, he has not only gained the respect of both his peers and contemporaries, but also has a loyal following amongst the general public as well. It's a good idea, and a good introduction to London's history, but I really got a little tired of the story (over and over and over) of the Brave, Heroic, Intelligent Man who manages to seduce, conquer, and commit adultery with the Silly, Stupid, Manipulative Woman, who is brainless, yes, but prettier than all the other silly, stupid, and manipulative women in that particular chapter.Spanning a duration of 1,800 years, this captures a large chunk of Russian history taking the reader on a journey, as they meet five families along the way. However, the fact that the characters change every couple of chapters (as the narrative jumps forward in time) hurts the flow of the story and stops you from developing any sort of attachment to the characters. When King Charles exceeds his powers, Parliament revolts, Charles decides to "govern without Parliament" and to make a secret alliance with Scotland, so England charges him with treason and chops his head off.
