About this deal

Though the village life is "old-fashioned" by today's standards, the children yearn to be independent as well as helpful, and I think this is timeless. None of the stories are moralising, and very few of them present an overtly normative idea of gender. Publisher's original yellow cloth boards, red titles to spine and red motif of Milly-Molly-Mandy to bottom right of the front board. In this beloved classic story, a young boy befriends a poetry-loving dragon living in the Downs above his home. Kingfisher released a Milly Molly Mandy doll [37] and Pan Macmillan has published an activity book; [38] there is also a niche market for Milly-Molly-Mandy's classic red and white striped dress with white bloomers.

There's a hint of too much 'niceness' that harkens back to the old morality tales foisted on children in the 1800s - a sort of, do good and good things will follow. While this might sound boring, we found it comforting and entertaining—we enjoyed learning about how things used to be while having the confidence that things were never going to be spoiled for this darling girl.

In the book of Philippians we are told to be anxious over nothing, and yet we are anxious over everything.

Her adventures at home and abroad, with her Mother and Father, Grandma and Grandpa, Uncle and Aunty, little-friend Susan and Billy Blunt, and all of the other villagers, are detailed in the twenty-one short stories contained in this anthology. These, then, are the moments I adduce as evidence of the value and wonder of reading, when people ask me (as they often used to when I was younger, and still do) why I spend so long curled up with a book. Her adventures are the everyday events of village life: running errands, going to school, making presents, fishing, picnicking, and so on. Here all the Milly-Molly-Mandy stories, Further Doings of Milly-Molly-Mandy,Milly-Molly-Mandy Again, Milly-Molly-Mandy Stories and More of Milly-Molly-Mandy brought together in a special gift collection. Four children wish on a Half Magic coin that gets their mother Alison half-way home, rescued by Mr Smith. There wasn’t much money in his family so there weren’t many books in the house, apart from a few precious bound collections of Boy’s Own comics. Milly-Molly-Mandy leads a delightful existence in a pink-and-white striped dress (red serge in winter, but the books are set in an eternal summer). When Mona the Mouse stumbles across the wondrous world of the Heartwood Hotel in the middle of a storm, she desperately hopes they'll let her stay. So it was to the Harris library in Preston that Dad took himself every week, working his way gradually through its offerings.

They are just stories of a little girl's life with her Mother and Father and Grandma and Grandpa and Aunty and Uncle, and her friends and neighbours. Milly-Molly-Mandy is a very proper and clever girl (almost too much so) who has a little adventure in every chapter. Rereading keeps you oiled and working smoothly, the better to let you access yourself and others for the rest of your life. As I got older, my dad was working long hours during the week, and in recompense had started coming home with a new book for me every Friday. In fact, teacher turns out to be completely a different person away from school; Billy Blunt and Little Friend Susan wish that she had come to their houses.
