About this deal

Some are super scientific and belong in text books while some illustrations would be at home as artwork in a museum. Also known as the fly agaric this red mushroom is probably one of the most recognizable mushrooms in popular culture especially in Scandinavian fairy tales. Regarded as one of the greatest ever botanical artists, German artist Maria Sibylla Merian created stunning natural history paintings in her own distinct style. Enjoyed this book, It wasn't what I expected going into it, it was mainly the pictures of the mushrooms, which were extremely pretty and interesting especially seeing the differences in them.

They were beautifully displayed and it was effortless to go through all of these wonderful pieces of art which are all brought together, neat and tidy in this book. This book is full of antique reproduction hand tinted botanical prints with samples of many different species of fungi, showing them in different forms, life stages, and settings. I adore art (and i am an artist) and i was so so inspired by all of the beautiful works collected in this book and i can’t wait to refer back to it for years to come. This wonderful illustrated drawing of English mushrooms is from the book “ Coloured figures of English fungi or mushrooms“. If you enjoyed these mushroom charts, you might want to check out these other wonderful vintage botanical images on the blog and other educational posters including these vintage vegetable prints.Fungi are members of the group of eukaryoticorganisms that includes microorganisms such asyeastsandmolds. Both a botanist and a masterful watercolorist, the plant genus Turpinia is named in honor of his creative legacy. Two of the books I have enjoyed the most this year had fungi at its core (Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon and Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia). The other collection focused on mushroom charts and identification posters rather than individual mushroom drawings. The details in this one are just stunning and you can also see the way they did shadows and showed various bits of the mushrooms.

Frenchman Pierre Jean François Turpin was a self-taught artist from the Napoleonic era who is considered to be one of the greatest botanical illustrators. But the blurb specifies that EACH painting show the plant (thus the mushroom) in its natural habitat.

I expected classic toadstool varieties, but the author also included lesser known shapes that resembled eggs, horns, and coral. While traditional illustrations of the past were usually rendered with paint on paper, today’s contemporary botanical art comes in a variety of styles and mediums. The eighteenth century saw many advances in the printing processes, allowing colors and details of drawings to appear even more accurate on paper. I would have liked to see more information about mushroom identification and warnings about eating wild mushrooms.I would not recommend it as a field guide, but as an interesting book full of fungi, it's wonderful. Titled Blackfield, the sprawling array of plant life appeared as black on one side, but when stood from the other side, a vibrant field of color was revealed. I really enjoyed seeing all the different types of mushrooms, many of which I have never seen before. Back before we could snap photos on cameras, or use an identification app, how could we learn all the intricate identifiers of mushrooms?
