About this deal

James Robertson, the author, deftly weaves together three different plotlines from different eras in history. James Robertson is an extremely fine novelist and more than once has been described as a chronicler of Scotland. Her tory is important and will be woven into the tale of Glen Conach, and will become part of its history. Gibb’s dubious motives colour our reading of his translation, which already contains the sort of fantastical miracles you’d expect of any hagiography, such as the resurrection of dead animals and the curing of a young woman’s blindness. And I like stories which, without being too prescriptive about it, interlink a few different things.

Greig’s young protagonist, off to university at St Andrews, knows full well the dangers of saying the wrong thing when asked about his religion (“the most personal and dangerous question of the times”). In our own restless, shifting times many of us have lost any sense of rootedness to a particular place. In ancient Britain, the hermit Saint Conach performs impossible miracles, which survive as legend in ‘The Book of Glen Conach’. In the early Middle Ages in Pictland, there’s the Christian hermit, Conach, whose signs and miracles performed in Glen are made legendary through ancient writings in a text known as “The Book of Conach.
