About this deal

Here, drawing on the rituals, children's songs, chants and superstitions of the rural West Country of England, Ira-Abel creates the twin realm through which she can make sense of an increasingly confusing and frightening world. Harvey – the only artist to have won the Mercury Prize twice, for her albums Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (2000) and Let England Shake (2011) – was born in Dorset in 1969. So through Let England Shake and then [2016’s] Hope Six [ Demolition Project], I was looking outward, looking at war, looking at the political landscape, looking at what was happening to all sorts of places in the world. I really wanted it to be not only a book of a lot of dark and very sensitive and emotional things, but also of great humor.

Growing up on a farm, and I think for any child that grows up in those surroundings, you learn about the life and death cycle very early on. J. Harvey fans (like me) English poetry scholars and book collectors (it's a beautiful hard cover edition).Like a more terrifying Llareggub, Underwhelem is populated by a large and peculiar cast of characters.

Ultimately, the record’s greatest gambit isn’t any individual bold choice but the decision to stack so many on top of each other: the disquieting production, the odd instrumentation, the ancient tongue, the daffy vocals. As a child we often holidayed in Cornwall, but outside of those wonderful memories, I’m afraid that I have always adopted the z instead of the s in a slightly mocking way.I didn’t want it to be of a specific era, but you’re not quite sure if you’re looking to the future or in the present or looking at the past. PJ Harvey’s narrative poem in Dorset dialect charts a nine-year-old girl’s final year of innocence, conjuring elements of nature, human behaviour and language to create an everlasting resonance. As a child we often holidayed in Cor Reminded me of: And the Ass Saw the Angel - Nick Cave, Among These Animals - Gaynor Jones, Water Shall Refuse Them - Lucie McKnight-Hardie, and Big Black (the band). The words themselves are a lovesome delight: soft and buzzy in mouth and ear (zummer, yoller, whiver, theasom), guttural and crude when needed (maggoty, puxy, stumble fuck).
