About this deal

First you can just shoot for the ground and rest assured that Portra will handle the highlights, essentially just ignore the sky when making your readings. The middle of the sky was starting to catch some sunrise colors and was three stops brighter than an average reading of the ground (including waterfall), but there was no way I was going to be able to use filters when they would immediately catch water droplets.

Aside from the T-grain one, I have no idea what those things are and will definitely forget them once I’ve finished writing this. It was published as a Patron early-access recipe on the Fuji X Weekly App back on December 1st, and now another early-access recipe has replaced it, so this one is now available to everyone! The sample images were a mix of daylight and low light ambient lit images, the film did well in each with very fine grain observable at normal viewing distances.

Portra 400 is designed for use by professionals, who need a cleaner look and reliability so that they can choose the look of the final image. While I enjoyed the more vibrant results I got from the likes of Kodak’s Ultramax and Ektar films, the paler Portra photographs are very good too. Again, with my trip to the badlands, it’s a place that’s not exactly known for it’s vibrant and lively colors, so Portra 400 was perfect. To combat this I follow your advice and use exposure comp but then my high lights clip or leave me with unflattering skin tones. Back in the film days I carried warming and cooling filters to change the “white balance” of the film when shooting in various lighting situations.

First up is that Portra incorporates some technology from Kodak Vision motion picture film, which is still used to shoot some huge titles. Admittedly if you need a different speed I would always recommend going with the native speeds of Portra 160 or Portra 800, but if you can't afford the space or cash of multiple emulsions then Portra 400 will be able to cover a range of lighting situations with minimal fuss. To do that, I really recommend shooting with your digital camera at ISO 400 and with daylight white balance. Kodak Portra 400 is the film of Instagram, which is not always a sign of quality, but in this case, the hype is real. EDUCATION: Chris graduated Magna Cum Laude from Adelphi University with a degree in Communications in Journalism in 2009.

This film really shines with skin tones, but definitely don’t knock it for landscape and settings because it’ll knock your socks off with how awesome it is! I think photographers who want that really beautiful vintage look of Kodak Portra should go right for 800 if they can’t find a solid roll of Kodak Portra 400 VS or NC. This means they keep skin tones looking nice and natural, unlike some of the more vivid Kodak films, and have very fine grain. If you’re wondering why your favorite product didn’t make the cut, there’s a chance it’s on another list.
