If this all sounds like a synopsis from the back of a VHS tape then that’s no surprise – this is retro horror filmed in a modern way and there are scenes straight out of an episode of Hammer House of Horror. Mitch (Shane Taylor) and Diane (Janine Nerissa Sothcott) inherit a spooky old house and discover kirlian photography equipment in the basement. So yeah, this is an entertaining version of the standard exorcism movie - detecting demonic possession via aura photography. I don’t believe there has ever been a horror story brought to the screen that revolves around Kirlian photography, so what we have is a truly unique concept, and one that I’ve wanted to turn into a movie for years.

Instead, it focuses on building tension and creating an unsettling atmosphere, which makes the horror all the more effective. A delightfully old school horror movie in the tradition of the Hammer and Amicus films of the 1970s, THE EXORCISM OF KAREN WALKER is the first film to fully explore the concept of Kirlian photography – a process of photographing a person’s ‘aura’. while the film might not re-invent the genre as such, it deals out shocks and suspense masterfully and is really as creepy as they come, thanks to a directorial effort that’s effective by relying on atmosphere rather than spectacle, and a solid cast, all more than capable to carry the thing rather beautifully.THE EXORCISM OF KAREN WALKER is produced by prolific film producer Jonathan Sothcott, the man responsible for popular Britflicks such as Vendetta and the We Still Kill The Old Way series. Before making his name in feature films, Sothcott produced documentaries and moderated DVD commentaries for numerous cult films, including The Wild Geese, Dr. THE EXORCISM OF KAREN WALKER is the first film to fully explore the concept of Kirlian photography – a process of photographing a person’s ‘aura’. The story is actually pretty captivating and the acting is surprisingly good for an amateur production like this.

In a bid to heal the wounds of the past, Mitch brings Karen home but soon discovers that her condition is the result of an evil force that has possessed her for most of her life. After these 70 minutes of dialogue (60 of which completely devoid of horror) the film finally gets to the big showdown exorcism scene.Tight, low budget chillers that put bums on seats and should hopefully make enough cash to generate sequels. Nothing horror in this movie, and HUSH movie was made with 1 million USD and is 10000 better than this garbage.

The seance is led by a mysterious woman named Madame Astra (Rula Lenska), who claims to be able to communicate with the dead. The Hereford Films production stars Shane Taylor, Rula Lenska, Denise Moreno and Janine Nerissa Sothcott ( Nemesis). The film takes place in a world of few people, features barely any establishing shots, and could easily be adapted for a stage play. Rula Lenska adds a lot of gravitas to the proceedings, which adds to the little ingredients that almost defyingly sums up to a better flick than I was preparing myself to watch. Amidst such heavy hitting thesping the stand out, however, is Janine Nerissa Sothcott, briefly seen in last year’s The Krays – Dead Man Walking and here playing her first lead.

As the seance progresses, Karen begins to feel uneasy, but Madame Astra assures her that everything is fine.

In conclusion, then, a very pleasant surprise and with an ending hinting at a sequel we are holding our breath for the next instalment.Provenance aside, though, it's the most beautiful photo - she's surrounded by a dazzling aura of gold and white and looks like an angel. Shane Taylor, Janine Nerissa, Denise Moreno and much-loved television actress Rula Lenska all star in the film.
