When I first started reading I readied myself for yet another desolate, poignant story from Dazai’s repertoire. Dazai did indeed attempt suicide again after submitting The Final Years for publication, but not until March 1937. Against this dispiriting backdrop, Yozo and his visitors try to maintain a lighthearted, even clownish atmosphere: playing cards, smoking cigarettes, vying for attention, cracking jokes, and trying to make each other laugh. The novel takes place in the middle of the story of No Longer Human, with Yozo in a sanitorium and his friends keeping him company for the few days he is in there.
