Today the still-glamorous Jeanne lives in the US, where she continues to make music and enjoy press attention. I didn’t want to depict him as a very cold doctor, even though he was a divisive figure… I think he genuinely wanted to help the women in his care, but… it is for the reader to decide. Casting De Laâge in the role proves as inspired as Tarantino giving Laurent her Hollywood break 12 years ago. Set in late 19th century France, in the bleak atmosphere of the Salpetriere, the first thing one notices is that all the inmates are women, while all the doctors are men.Laurent sees such phenomena as showing that the world she depicts in her film is not just of historical interest. But now she has directed her most recent – and most ambitious – feature film, The Mad Women’s Ball, a muted if poignant costume drama a world away from either Basterds or batty blockbusters. While the film sheds light on a dark chapter in the history of medical science, it ushers a revolution against centuries of oppression on feminine subjectivity.
Geneviève initially treats Eugénie the same as others, but after Eugénie divulges pertinent truth about Geneviève’s sister, the nurse comes to realize Eugénie’s unique abilities. Dancing here is also symbolic since although a 19th-century woman has to dance to the tunes of a patriarchal vigilante, she reasserts her artistic freedom through the creative act of performance. She was a pianist from an upper-class family, and she was locked away by her stepbrother because he did not want to share his inheritance with her.When young Eugenie is committed to the asylum, Genevieve assumes that the new girl is just like all the other women, protesting her own sanity despite all evidence to the contrary. The word hysteria comes from the Greek word for the uterus ( hystera), which the doctors of ancient Egypt and Greece believed “wandered” around the female body, causing behavioural abnormalities. No wonder that such women who claimed to see visions were marginalised by society or treated as mad by a patriarchal medical establishment, particularly by the likes of Charcot, the founder of modern neurology, whose public demonstrations of his hypnotherapy skills with female patients made him into a kind of showman and reduced vulnerable women into objects of spectacle. I’m making movies and the more I’m seeing the world fall apart, the less tolerance I have for actors complaining.
Melanie Laurent paints her women-centric movie with a challenging, intense, and impressionable palette that hooks the audience right from the beginning to the end. Instead, audiences will be most familiar with her work from two bonkers Netflix offerings: Michael Bay’s breathtakingly daft thriller 6 Underground, and from French-language sci-fi hokum Oxygen (Laurent wakes trapped in an airtight cryogenic box). Upon protesting, Eugénie is prescribed the cold water treatment, followed by the hot water treatment.
It is neither possible nor appropriate to rebel against everything, all the time, to attack every individual or institution guilty of injustice. It is a selfish thought, and she feels a little ashamed, but that is just how things are at this moment: her first concern must be to get out of here.
