The Dell WD15 Docking Station is a strong performer, once you get the right combination of monitors to get it up and running. I wish that the mini DisplayPort were a full-size DisplayPort jack that didn't require an adapter, and I would have preferred having a DVI port to a VGA one, like Plugable's USB-C dock has. Note: Ensure that the Dell Docking Station WD15 is connected to your PC to update firmware of the docking station. If your monitor is connected to a docking station, then the video output on your computer may be disabled. Note: Do not disconnect the dock from your PC or remove the AC power from your dock during the firmware update procedure.
We hooked up the WD15 to a Dell XPS 13 Gold Edition, a 1080p TV via HDMI and a 4K monitor via VGA at a resolution of 2048 x 1152. The WD15 offers a solid dual 1080p monitor (or single 4K monitor) experience at your desk, but you can't pair it with a non-USB Type-C laptop, and its DisplayPort connector won't output at the highest resolution. Connecting the computer to the docking station allows you to access all devices (mouse, keyboard, stereo speakers, external hard drive, and large-screen displays) without having to plug each device to the computer.Dell highly recommends the following applications to automate the installation of BIOS, driver, and critical updates specific to your PC and docking station. Connect WD15/TB16/TB18DC to Dell computers that were launched before 2020 and run Firmware Update Utility.
Ensure that the USB-C port on your computer supports either DisplayPort over USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 protocol. If that fails, try to replug in the audio cable to the docking station from the external speaker output. Install the RealTek USB Audio Driver for the Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock and Dell Dock available for the PC. Ensure that the video cable that is attached to the panel is tightly secured to the video port in the docking station. Ensure that the computer is connected with the docking station to disconnect and reconnect to the docking station.
After the software update process completes, connect the AC adapter to the WD15 dock first, and then attach the USB-C cable to the PC and update the Dell Dock firmware before using the docking station. The Dell Docking Station WD15 is a device that links all your electronic devices to your computer using a USB-C cable interface. Without the USB-C port, I was unable to try using a USB Type-C-to-USB-Type-A adapter with an older laptop.
