About this deal

If you read this book, you will learn how she came to own that power and how all the big energy she’s held inside herself has come alive from the work she’s done in sobriety. I spent so much time and energy pushing back at a sober life because all I could see then was just more loss and limitations. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. This was a Father’s Day gift last year for my 11 year sober partner that I recently took from the shelf to read. The place where we pretend, in big ways and in small, that we are something or someone we know in our bones we are not.

We Are The Luckiest – A book review - Waking Up The Ghost We Are The Luckiest – A book review - Waking Up The Ghost

Great, vivid real-life examples of how it can destroy your life (and probably is even if your stories aren't as extreme as hers). How she describes the milieu of her life, and her perspective on children, relationships, self and the divine are very much in tune with how people relate to the world and each other in modern terms. In Push Off from Here, McKowen delves deeply into each of her nine what they mean, how they work, and how every person can live them. You control their perception, control their response to you, control who you need them to be, In telling the truth, I was surrendering control with the hope that it would lead to something different. Leaving behind alcohol myself, if it in any small way helps this dear one stay dry, is more than worth it.Siting there, with just a few physical feet between us, I thought, I have an entire world inside me that you know nothing about.

Secrets and lies, guilt, shame, and loneliness took their toll on McKowen’s psyche; booze was poisoning her body and changing her brain. And keeping 10 percent of yourself from your partner, or whomever you could trust with your heart, will make you 100 percent lonely. She addresses topics such as the correlation between trauma and addiction, the importance of radical honesty, letting go of the illusion of control, the value of community, a reminder that healing is a continual process, and that the process is a gift. At first, the nearness was too much; there was nothing to protect me from the immediacy of things - not from the bright lights or the sharp pain. In the end, though, I’m not sure it matters: this book is full of thought provoking questions and reflections that seem important for anyone who needs to make a change. What I mean by faith is simply this: when you enter into an unknown place, one where you haven't yet developed the skills to operate - and especially one where you don't even want to be - you have to rely on some idea that you will be carried through it and that it will be better. Now, repeat this cycle a few thousand times, and the brain’s reward and learning functions change significantly.

Given my love for Laura and her mission, it might be surprising to hear that I was skeptical that I would get much of anything out of her follow-up book, Push Off From Here. With profound honesty and boundless compassion, Push Off from Here provides an actionable framework for healing what pains us and proves that a life of sobriety can be synonymous with a life of magic, peace, and freedom. Part memoir, part beginner’s guide to “sobriety” (the author reveals at the end the she was taking Ambien every night while she wrote the book)- at times astute,The hippocampus — the part of the brain responsible for creating memories — lays down “tracks” or “records” of this rapid sense of satisfaction. Here, in straight-talking chapters filled with personal stories, McKowen addresses issues such as facing facts, the question of AA, and other people’s drinking.

With huge gratitude to the author, New World Library and edelweiss for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.Songs reminiscent to The Band CAMINO on Adderall, a boyband Bring Me The Horizon, and VALLEY if they grew up listening to solely hard rock. I’m quick to just move on to the next book on my list if the first few pages don’t capture my attention. Each chapter was organized to fit each of the nine “things” and made is such an interesting and insightful read. Things to consider in all parts of your life where things might not feel right for you: codependency, fear, martyrdom (that's me).
