Start hardening off by opening the frame in the day and when the risk of frosts is passed it is time to plant out, preferably under a cloche until the plant gets too large. Preparing the Soil

Come the autumn, get a friend to help you lift your fruit! Further Information on Growing Giant Pumpkins She’d have to lie down,” Hu says of Cinderella. And her ride, he points out, “definitely wouldn’t be super elegant.” The pumpkin would probably also need much longer to grow. “If we wanted it eight times bigger,” he says, “we’d need an eight times longer season — about eight years.” Julie Huffaker from Farmhouse Harvest says: 'Each plant typically requires at least 400-600 square feet of space. Ensure they have plenty of room to spread out and receive adequate sunlight.'Also, take a soil test. If your soil is acidic, apply lime in fall to bring soil to a more neutralpH. When there are three fruits forming, it can be best to then remove any more flowers. Ultimately, you then choose which of those three are growing the fastest, removing the others after a few weeks and putting all the energy into that one pumpkin.

It’s possible that the first one will abort, or the pollination didn’t take, so it’s a good idea to pollinate a few ‘spare’ pumpkins further up the vine. These can be removed when you’re sure the first one has taken, which is usually when it gets to about 40 inches in circumference. Firstly, choose the best quality seeds from a reliable seed supplier. Soak the giant pumpkin seeds in tepid water for around 30 minutes before sowing. In spring the pumpkins will benefit from a high-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage the growth of foliage. Then the nutrient demands switches from lots of nitrogen for foliage to more phosphorus or potassium to encourage flowering and fruits. A weekly or fortnightly feed is enough to provide plants with all the nutrients they need. In the summer months my giant pumpkins become like my pets, I worry about them at night, I water them, I water them some more, they get daily attention, liquid manure feeds, their flowers get hand pollinated and the vines get ‘managed’. It’s ironic that giant pumpkins do, in my experience, offer little in taste – but I don’t grow them for anything more than the size challenge – how big will they get? Can I get them to grow bigger? Will they be the biggest in the Dorking squash and pumpkin show?!

Spread 6 inches of composted cow manure over the bed and till it in. This will be the base of fertility for the giant pumpkin next year. Sometimes a pumpkin fruit seems to set and then perhaps a week or two later you find the plant has decided to stop supporting it. I usually find this coincides with a change in the weather – a cold spell with low sunlight will do it. This occurred in 2016 ( see picture) but the plants went on to reflower and grow new sizeable pumpkins ( although I was rather worried for a while). In 2017 we had a dismal summer and I couldn’t get a single giant pumpkin fruit to last longer than 3 weeks – they would give me hope and then start weeping pumpkin juice from small holes in their surface before rotting.

Watering and Fruit Development

STEM: An acronym (abbreviation made using the first letters of a term) for science, technology, engineering and math. Giant pumpkin seeds are larger than normal pumpkin seeds so before sowing, soak them for an hour or two in tepid water (20-30°C). Direct sow or start indoors 2 weeks prior to planting. Seeds need consistent warmth to germinate, placing them in a windowsill will not generate enough heat and is not recommended. Plant young squash plants into prepared ground (see above), taking care not to disturb the roots. Firm them in gently and water well. Space bush varieties 90cm (3ft) apart and trailing varieties 1.5m (5ft) apart. Protect young plants from slugs and snails, especially in damp weather. In the UK we have a few varieties of seed suitable for giant pumpkin growing, all available from the allotment shop: pumpkin seeds. Dill’s Atlantic Giant Pumpkin Seeds
