About this deal

Like most Chromebooks, Acer's Chromebook 14 is only sold in one configuration. It comes with an Intel Celeron N3160 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 32GB eMMC hard drive. It’s only really apparent once you start using it that the Chromebook 314 has been built to a budget, and that partly comes down to the keyboard and touchpad. The keyboard itself isn’t bad. It has a spacious layout with good-sized Shift and Ctrl keys, even if I’m not a huge fan of the split-key design on the left Shift and Return keys, where one chunk of the key is actually the key next door. The keys have a slightly uneven wobble if you move your finger tip across the key cap, but the action is crisp and you don’t notice the wobble while you’re typing.

And, if you're not a super demanding user, you should be pretty happy with the Acer Chromebook 14's battery life. In TechRadar's Chromebook battery test – in which we play an HD video continuously until the battery calls it quits – the Acer Chromebook 14 managed a runtime of about 9 hours and 2 minutes (screen set at 50%brightness).The Go is arguably a more premium feeling device, but there’s no denying the advantage in performance from an extra pair of CPU cores. Of course, at this price point, some pretty decent Windows laptops can be had. You’re just about into entry-level Ultrabook territory.

One upside of the low-power spec is that battery life is very good. In our video rundown test, the Chromebook 314 kept going for just over 13 hours: a superb result. The Acer Chromebook 14 demonstrated acceptable performance on the WebGL Aquarium graphics simulation, which tests 3D rendering. The notebook mustered 47 frames per second with 250 and 500 fish in the tank, while the Dell and Toshiba both sped along at 60 fps with as many as 1,000 fish. One of the upgrades over the basic entry-level Chromebook 14 is that Full HD display, which is certainly a joy to use. Whatever you’re up to, be it editing documents or streaming a cheeky bit of telly when you’re supposed to be working, those visuals stay perfectly crisp. The inexpensive Acer Chromebook 14's aluminum body is much nicer than the plastic competition. The matte-finish, 14-inch full HD IPS display is a great size for work and play, but still keeps this laptop's footprint small enough for commuting.

While we’re hearing good things about some of Mediatek’s new Chromebook CPUs, the MT8183C Acer is using here is one of the older ones. It has eight cores running at a maximum 2GHz, which means it’s faster in some multi-threaded tests than comparable Celeron N4500 and N4200 Chromebooks.

With the Acer Chromebook Spin 514 you get a well-designed convertible Chromebook with a Core i3 CPU and 8GB of RAM, giving you ample performance for everyday office work, browsing or study, not to mention Android and Linux apps. The mostly aluminium build gives it a light but premium feel and, at just 1.37kg, it won’t weigh you down. The Acer Chromebook 14's 0.9-megapixel webcam shot pixelated photos of me in our office that appeared to have been set in a pointillist filter. While the camera did a good job of reproducing the red of the wall behind me, it captured little to no detail, with most of my hair registering as a brown swoosh.Acer gave the Chromebook 14 a 1.6-GHz Intel Celeron N3160 CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 32GB eMMC drive, which provide enough pep for multitasking. When I split my screen between a dozen tabs and a streaming 1080p YouTube video and opened Google Keep and Cut The Rope, the system stayed speedy. I saw no lag as I typed in a Google Doc, moved from tab to tab and switched between apps. Measuring 0.81 by 12.3 by 8.8 inches (HWD) and weighing 3.3 pounds, the Vero 514 is a touch bigger than Acer's less eco-friendly standard Acer Chromebook 514 (0.76 by 12.7 by 8.7 inches and 3.1 pounds). The HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook, which has a 13.5-inch screen with a squarer 3:2 aspect ratio, is trimmer at 0.65 by 11.6 by 8.7 inches and 2.8 pounds. Would you like a lightweight, low-cost laptop that just works? Where you’re ready to go in seconds and you’re never left waiting half an hour for an update to install? If so, you might want to think about a Chromebook. While Google-powered laptops used to be thought of as weird, slow and limiting, they’ve become powerful, practical and flexible computers, capable of handling a wide range of tasks. What’s more, they’re perfect as a secondary laptop for travelling or as a device for homework and study, particularly if the students concerned spend more time using web-based apps over traditional applications. This isn’t the most stylish, the lightest or the most powerful Chromebook but it’s the one with the best overall balance of performance, features and value for money. It has an excellent 13.3in full HD screen, a lightweight, convertible form factor and superb connectivity, including 802.11ax Wi-Fi. The keyboard is fantastic, and it’s a great device for everyday use.
