The size of the sail, cloth weave, weight, and design will all play large factors in determining how fast a sail will stretch. Unfortunately, the cumulative friction can make for heavy going – firstly in taking in the reef and later when it comes to shaking it out again. About 4 feet up from the foot or bottom edge of the sail, you will see two or three or more holes sewn into the belly of the sail. Then there were rotating booms, around which a sail could be wound to achieve the same effect – roller reefing, in fact. Reefing the mainsail involves lowering the sail part way to reduce its size when the wind increases. Hey guys, I just bought an 85 Catalina 30TR, and it looks like the previous owner never rigged the mainsail for reefing.Reef Hooks are used to hold down the "new" Tack (at the reef point) when jiffy reefing the Mainsail.
