About this deal

Similarly, you'll want to place the indoor unit somewhere well-ventilated, but away from open windows, radiators or direct sunlight. Accuracy is one of the most important considerations for anyone in the market for a personal weather station. Fortunately, the thermometer, hygrometer, and barometer proved to be consistently accurate, which certainly isn’t the case with all home weather stations. On the flip side, it can be a bit problematic when attempting to understand real-time data at times. For example, rather than monitoring live outdoor readings, the app refreshes every few minutes to provide updated information. In fact, there can be up to 10 minutes between refreshes. These micro-lulls will have minimal effect on the long-term data, but the lapse in real-time data is important to note nonetheless.

Linking it up to WiFi - usually the complicated bit - happened instantly, and it now just sits a few feet from my boiler cupboard, ready to let me know if I'm in any danger. Setting everything up is pretty easy. There's some fiddly calibration to be done with the rain gauge and anemometer, and it's worth investing in a shield for the outdoor thermometer, which Netatmo can supply, but you're given clear instructions all the way. But maybe that's not good enough for you. Maybe you really need to know what the weather is like directly outside your front door. After all, the guy down the street could have his weather station set up next to his barbecue grill, spoiling the readings. I get it, and if you need this level of agency, a weather station’s definitely for you. With that in mind, I looked at four leading brands—all within a “giftable” price range—to see whose weather is better, and whose forecast is finest. To gauge overall accuracy, I recorded each station’s high and low predictions for five consecutive days, compared those numbers against that station’s own measured high/lows for each day, then calculated the average variance in degrees for each of the 10 data points. Firstly, it links to your home's WiFi. There's no hub, just a very easy connection process on a smartphone app. This means, straight away, you can be alerted to any presence of Carbon Monoxide with an instant notification.Netatmo has the largest network of Weather Stations in the world, which monitors the environment in more than 175 countries, available on the Netatmo Weathermap. All Met Office UK weather observations are subject to an internationally-agreed rigorous quality-control process. For new official records, we undertake further careful investigation to ensure that the measurement taken is robust, reliable, is feasible in the meteorological set-up and adheres to international World Meteorological Organisation standards. This is why you’ll often see observations records labelled ‘provisionally broken’ before the full verification has taken place, and for official confirmation of the record to be announced a few weeks later. The Tempest ( Rating: 6/10) is a recent entry to the scene, and like Netatmo it aims to give you a lot of information with a limited footprint. Though the hardware is larger than Netatmo’s, it’s more discreet than AcuRite and Ambient’s, looking a bit like a bird feeder and intended to be mounted on a pole (not included) somewhere in your yard or on your roof. The system also requires an indoor module that relays data from the sensor to your Wi-Fi network, but that module doesn’t provide any indoor climate information. Setup is fairly painless, at least in comparison to most other weather stations on the market. This data is uploaded to the web so other people can keep an eye on local conditions around the world, because Netatmo has a vast network of thousands of weather stations. There's two in my small town, for example, and dozens in the area around me. There's lots of weather stations on the market, if you know where to look, but Netatmo's Smart Weather Station does it differently. It takes out the complications, makes everything really simple and easy to understand, and it's just so elegant and robust.

One minor gripe we have with the app is its refresh rate. While the weather station automatically transmits readings every five minutes, the app only refreshes the data every ten. As long as you have an internet connection, you can use the web or mobile app to monitor all of your weather station's readings anytime, anywhere. Overall, we found it to be well-presented and easy to navigate. You'll be prompted to register a free Netatmo account before getting started. From there, it's a case of plugging the indoor unit into the mains and following the app's on-screen instructions to get it connected to the wi-fi. The indoor unit acts as the 'base' station and communicates wirelessly with the outdoor sensor, which is battery-powered. Netatmo, the leading French smart home company for a safer and more comfortable home, announced today the launch of the Shelter accessory for the Smart Home Weather Station. If you'd like some increased functionality, the web app has a few extra features, including the ability to export your data to Excel - this is only possible for the outdoor sensors, though.

Sure enough, it has. Today’s home weather stations are cheaper, more powerful, and do more than ever. Also, the old guard in this category have stepped up their mobile app game to compete with the newcomers on the market.
