About this deal

The book follows two lifelong friends, Chioma and Onome, as they investigate the atrocities that led to the massacre in their hometown of Asaba and the obstacles they encounter. It grapples with a plethora of themes relevant to modern day Nigeria and the role of the press across the world. It was extremely hard to put this book down and 10x harder to not think about the story and its characters throughout the day. I also hope to learn more about the culture in Quebec and further develop my French language skills.

It is one of the more interesting words in the English language, in that its connotative meaning can be either very negative or very positive. As I read it, memories of my school days and the places where I have lived come to life, which helps me empathize with the characters. The book would be of interest to anyone who cares for fictional stories, history, colonialism, Nigerian (and wider African) culture, friendships, politics, social movements, and the list goes on. Efemini does not refrain from straightforward and unapologetic honesty, transporting the reader with the courageous voices of Chioma and Onome. Since its official publication on 20th March it has been a pleasure to receive such a positive reception reflected by amazing reviews. This work has left me inspired and hopeful that young voices will not allow history to remain neglected under the chronicles of British colonisation.

Nevertheless, I cannot deny that the general neglect of African history during my first two years has only made me hungrier for history pertaining to Nigeria. I’ve included a quote at the beginning of this post that I wrote in the article, which really encapsulates my motivation for writing this book. You’ll hear from them in their own words about their experiences, ambitions, insights, and any advice they’d give to fellow women seeking to leave the planet better than they found it. Chioma experiences the Asaba massacre, an overlooked and traumatic event of the war, and is forced to confront issues of censorship, grief, and trust.Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. Both characters were bold, courageous, and brilliantly written; they accomplished much more than individuals at their (fictional) time were able to. Put simply, it all started as an extended essay that I wrote in my last year of the International Baccalaureate diploma programme that I later decided to translate into a fictional narrative during my first year of university. The University of Edinburgh has been home to numerous talented individuals, and second-year history and politics student Claudia Efemini is no exception.
