About this deal

It’s a step further from genetics where it is possible, if you choose, to do genetic studies to determine if you carry the gene for life debilitating diseases such as Huntington’s, breast cancer, etc. Is there perhaps a particular age or moment in your life when you would be most inclined to view your string?

The Measure Book Club Questions and Discussion Guide The Measure Book Club Questions and Discussion Guide

I made an emotional connection with what they were facing and their situations, but not with them, which is a huge miss.

A luminous, spirit-lifting blockbuster that asks: would you choose to find out the length of your life? After Javier dies on a rescue mission, Jack decides to go public with their string-switching scheme. You can see how each storyline will play out, who will learn their lessons and who won't, and even how each character's life will end. As society comes together and pulls apart, The Measurecharts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose paths interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that changes everything.

The Measure: A Read with Jenna Pick: Erlick, Nikki

Imagine waking up one day in a world where everyone age 22 and up has received a small wooden box, that inside, holds a string measuring the length of their life. The local community expects Nainoa to grow up to be a hero, but away from home, he faces prejudice against his race and economic class. When he finally tells Amie this truth, along with the truth about his short-string, she falters, briefly distancing herself from him as she struggles to face the reality that, if she begins a life with him, their time together will be short. Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is a sweeping, ambitious, and invigorating story about family, friendship, hope, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

I was not inspired, and by the last few chapters I found myself speed reading through a bog just to get it all over with. In a deeper, more confined multi-POV narrative than Erlick, Washburn explores each family member’s response to Nainoa’s destiny: their doubts, their resentment, and their secret hope. He soon delves his own way into the mystery surrounding the boxes with the help of his friend Javier. So, possibly reading about something else that was out of the control of the world’s population was presently a step too far from a personal point of view. You may think this book would be depressing, but despite the loss of some SHORT STRINGERS, it’s actually quite uplifting and hopeful.
