After a four-year absence, his most famous creation, Harry Hole, is back in Killing Moon, the 13th instalment in a series loved by readers across the globe. Soon after arriving, Richard becomes a social outcast and is blamed for the disappearance of his classmate Tom. There are parasite infestations (think The Last of Us), decapitations and, at one point, the anonymous perp eats a human brain. The synopsis said: “In the wake of his parents’ tragic deaths in a house fire, 14-year-old Richard Elauved has been sent to live with his aunt and uncle in the remote, insular town of Ballantyne. It may have put me off my dinner for days afterwards, but this is exactly how I like my crime thrillers.A lot of the regulars that have worked with Harry are back and in many ways, it’s as if Harry had never left the force. As the school bully, Richard is a somewhat unlikeable character, so I struggled to sympathize with him. Harry's squad regularly meets in Aune's hospital room, where they plan their investigation, go over the evidence, discuss their findings, speculate about possible perpetrators; and so on. When the body of one of them is found with fresh stitches along her hairline, the hunt is on to find a murderer with singular methods.

She’s kidnapped and Harry is forced to take on a case as a private detective in his native Norway to pay for the ransom. Two attractive young women have been murdered: Susanne Anderson's body was found without a brain; and Bertine Bertilsen's body was found without a head. Translated by Séan Kinsella — The 13th novel in Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series should have some sort of warning on the cover. I know readers will fall for our hero Richard as they join him on his journey navigating grief, isolation. They have bought me hours of joy and intrigue, with a character who is loveable, complicated but also consumed by demons. One of Harry's bar friends is a 72-year-old woman named Lucille, a former actress who borrowed over nine hundred thousand dollars for a movie project.

A rich real estate magnate engages Harry to prove his innocence and Harry only gets involved because he can use the unholy sum of payment to resolve the situation in Los Angeles - maybe. The dark nature of Scandinavian crime thrillers is not lost on the reader, nor is the seamlessness of the translation. Rating: Thank you to the publisher for a free advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In past interviews, Nesbo has said that it’s important that he depicts the murders of women in his fiction because it’s an honest reflection of what happens in the real world. In the unlikeliest team-up ever, corrupt cop Truls Berntsen, a favourite in Police, becomes Harry’s ally. There’s an aura to Harry that draws you into his orbit, even though it may be akin to watching a car crash. The seventh in the Hole series, The Snowman, was adapted into a Hollywood film starring Michael Fassbender as Harry, alongside Silo star Rebecca Ferguson and Top Gun ace Val Kilmer. It has a YA feel to it, which is not a bad thing at all, but as the book is classified as ‘adult’, be aware that it feels more on the YA side. But there is more to this case than meets the eye and the clock is ticking to find the missing woman, before the body count rises. Primarily a police procedural, this novel also has a lot of drama, as drama follows Harry wherever he goes.
