About this deal

The poetry books I have read so far are either lackluster or bland in terms of writing, but this book completely changed my viewpoint on poetry. I knew (and some memorized) a good 50% of the poems in her book but what I was excited for the most are the ones I didn't know. I like how not all of her pieces stem from anger, or lust, or anguish; the emotional variety of this collection strengthens it.

Some of the poems are not new to those who have followed her videos on YouTube and seen her TEDtalks, so they will be accustomed to infamous pieces such as B, Shosholoza, Montauk and Private Parts. Maybe the next time you see love is twenty years after the divorce, love is older now, but just as beautiful as you remembered. I couldn't fathom or relate to most of her poems which made it harder for me to like this collection of poems. You may have never heard of Sarah Kay or maybe you have watched every performance in every nook and cranny of the internet. And I know we live in different worlds, and we're always really busy, but in my dreams you spin around me so fast, I always wake up dizzy.

Many of her poems centre around her experiences living in America and there are references to particular subway stations/streets etc but its so well written you could imagine being there. But I wrote the poem after a pattern had developed in my life that resulted in me having “near-misses” with great tragedies. Following the success of her breakout poem, “B”, Sarah Kay releases her debut collection of poetry featuring work from the first decade of her career. Although Kay works primarily in spoken word poetry, she has had written poems published in magazines such as Foundling Review, DamselFly Press, and decomP literary magazine.

Sarah Kay, a graduate of Brown University, was born in New York to a Japanese American mother and a Jewish American father. It seems like these poets sometimes just put a bunch of random stuff together, punctuate it with spaces and almost dare, challenge you to finally yell "What is this? An alum of Brown University Graduate School’s Masters Program in the Art of Teaching Secondary English. Well, it is an outstanding collection of poems which I do not want to give away too much of, but this collection will only make you wish there was a volume 2. I've also recommended the book to my other friends that are into poetry, and even some that haven't read poetry before.I'm sad to say I didn't really enjoy this poetry collection, specially since everyone who's read this seems to love it. She is perhaps best known for her talk at the 2011 TED conference, which garnered two standing ovations and has been seen over three million times online. Here are some of the poems from this collection performed by Sarah: (I highly recommend watching them!
