About this deal

It's always a very grounding experience to read CG's sensible approach to the difficulties that life throws at everyone (those permanently in her life as well as those she cares for temporarily). She has strong morals which she is unafraid to share but always considers the sensitivities of others around her. Whilst she is clear about her views she would never hurt anyone by speaking inappropriately. That doesn't stop her being clear and straightforward. Following the success of Damaged, you might imagine that a brand new author would have a bit of a cooling off period. This was not to be the case with Cathy Glass. Her next book, “Hidden” was published in 2008, and it was a success in its own right. This book had another memorable character at the center of it, only this child was a far cry different from the explosive Jodie character that Glass had written about in her first book. In the book Hidden, Tayo is the child that is described as being a polite, calm and mild-mannered child that was well spoken. But while he displayed excellent manners and was very well behaved, Tao was hiding a terrible past that no child should have had to live through. Tao formerly lived in Nigeria, but was kidnapped by his mother and taken to the UK illegally. To help support her debauched life of drinking, and drugs, his abusive mother was a prostitute. The mother cast Tayo out onto the streets after he sustained an injury and was no longer able to earn money for the woman. Based on the horrors that he suffered on the streets of Central London, Glass wrote that she had never met a child that showed the kind of strength as Tayo. He had the kind of inner resolve that she had never seen before. As soon as I get a book by Cathy Glass I have to read it straight away… not only an author but a wonderful and very caring lady…" Adrian, Lucy and Paula are all young adults now. Adrian went away to study at university and then returned home. Lucy and Paula went to local colleges and university. In addition to the success that Cathy Glass has known for the foster care related memoirs she has written, she has also published three novels. The first was titled: “The Girl in the Mirror”, a story about a young woman who uncovers a terrible family secret that was buried long ago. The other two titles are: “My Dad’s A Policeman” and “Run Mummy Run”. Like all of the books by Glass, these novels are based on true stories.

By the time Lucy came to me, aged eleven, she was withdrawn, refusing to eat and had bouts of terrifying anger. It was thought that the damage done to her was irreversible and there was little I could do. Having read all of Cathy Glass’ books, I had high expectations of this book, and they were fulfilled! I recommend this book to anybody.

Right from the beginning Lucy’s mother couldn’t cope, but it wasn’t until Lucy reached eight years old that she was finally taken into permanent foster care. This story is about Tilly (14) and her growing up in a house with domestic abuse. There are things that come up, that in a fictional book, we might call plot twists. Tilly manages to get out of the situation, leaving her mother and stepfather to sort themselves out. Things are rarely straight forward, even when you’re thinking, ‘things couldn’t get any worse.’ Lucy was born to a single mother who had been abused and neglected for most of her own childhood. I love Cathy Glass’ work and this was no different. A really personal memoir and all the more touching as Lucy features in other books too.So I am a massive Cathy Glass fan and have been for around ten years now; she's probably the Author that I own the most books by. Lucy and I have always believed we were destined to be mother and daughter. It just took us a while to find each other. I hope you enjoy Lucy’s story. I enjoyed writing it.This is the story of my adopted daughter, Lucy, who came to me as a foster child and stayed for good. Wonderfully written, not only a great author but clearly such a caring person. I think about fostering. Cathy doesn’t sugar-coat it and shows how hard and frustrating it can be…" In the other books I'd read, Cathy's own children were a lot younger and it was nice to read about them as adults and be updated on their lives.

WILL YOU LOVE ME? LUCY’S STORY | Cathy Glass

It is this type of sad but honest writing that helps the reader sympathize as well as empathize with the child that Cathy finds covered in blood that first night, after cutting her own wrist. She documents how eventually it became obvious that the child was in need of psychiatric help. Readers cry at the heart wrenching story of how Social Services removed Jodie from Glass’s care and had her placed in a residential unit, instead of paying for the help the child needed. This happened, in spite of the fact that Glass was able to get Jodie to open up and reveal details about the abuse her parents and others had been afflicting on her. The plot unravels like a movie when members of a pedophile ring are arrested and brought to justice. Hidden I read A Terrible Secret in two sittings. Couldn’t put it down. Well done, another very emotional and gripping read…" The eleventh memoir and latest title from the internationally bestselling author and foster carer Cathy Glass. This book tells the true story of Cathy’s adopted daughter Lucy. I've just had to give up on a book of which I had high expectations so needed a replacement to settle me and Cathy Glass books are consistently good quality. Couldn't put the book down! I love Cathy Glass' work and this was no different. A really personal memoir and all the more touching as Lucy features in other books too."
